[opensuse-factory] Packman and oS 11.2
Does anyone know when - and if - packman will provide the necessary packages for 11.2 to be able to use kaffeine and xine? I cannot live without xine nor kaffeine (for my TV [dvb]) and I cannot fully test 11.2 without having both of these functioning. The files necessary to make these apps. function are normally available from packman and I am truly surprised that with oS 11.2 now at the MS6 stage packman has yet to create the necessary repos to handle oS 11.2. (Strangely enough, when I installed Kubuntu 9.10 the other day and tried to run kaffeine, Kubuntu came back with a message stating that I needed certain files before kaffeine would work, asked me if I wanted those files installed and after I responded with an Yes the files where automagically installed from the 'net. Nice touch that, I thought.) BC -- Great Man reaches complete understanding of the main issues; Petty Man reaches complete understanding of the minute details." Normally around the official release date.

That is standard. 11.2 won't come out for another few months and Packman does not have the time to re-compile each time when there is a new version out. Would take a bit too much of their time. Download the 11.1 rpm.src files and recompile yourself. That however won't mean that it will work when 11.2 comes out. houghi -- houghi http://houghi.org http://www.plainfaqs.org/linux/ http://www.netmeister.org/news/learn2quote.html

Thanks for the response. Looks like that I have no other choice because I cannot really think of installing 11.2/KDE43 for a better "look-see" as I use the digital TV quite a bit (I haven't looked at a real television set for some years now). I need libxine1-codecs (at least) for xine/kaffeine to work. In the software management of YaST this file is shown as available but when selected the error message comes up stating that nothing provides this rpm (even though the packman repo is selected). I am wondering why such a codecs file would need to be altered in some way (recompiled) to work with 11.2 and not be "provided" in its 11.1 form? 11.2 should not be installed on an operational machine. 11.2 M* is still in development and things WILL break. (Sometimes I think developers break things to remember you that it is still in development. ;-)

Could be anything and when using an 11.1 repo with 11.2 M6, it could be unlikely that somebody will take the time to resolve it unless something very trivial.

No idea. If jou need your computer to work, use 11.1. Using 11.2 for a machine you _must_ use is asking for problems. If there is some reason that you want to test 11.2 now and be able to also test its video capabilities, so that in mid november you are sure to install 11.2, then best compile everything yourself concerning the video parts. What I would do is if I was dependent of Packman is prospone the testperiod to mid november. If that were not possible, then I would be testing 11.1 now and use that for the next year. houghi -- How do you ask a man to be the last man to die in Iraq? No, the 11.2 "machine" (actually 2 HDs sitting in cradles and interchangable with my 'main' system) is only intended to be used for testing.

But isn't 11.2 due out around that time? So doing any testing with missing features is not really "testing". I spent hours today downloading the missing dependencies for compiling the source (using rpmbuild) for use with kaffeine and xine -- and after much farting around by the rpmbuild it came up with the message that it exited with an Error 1. So, all the time and effort was a total waste of time and effort.

I have no problems with xine under 11.1. There is a slight hassle with kaffeine, though, which was never evident until some very recent updates of some files; what they are I don't know but I do know that they have something to do with KDE4.3. I have written to the author, or maintainer of kaffeine, a couple of times but I got no response from him- not even a simple courteous response to state that my email(s) had been received.

Indeed. If Packman is what you want to test as well, you must wait till they see fit to make it available and test then.

It is indeed a pain to compile. I never had it working either. That is why I apreciate Packman so much for doing it for me. It is a pity that you see it as a waste of time, jusy because the result was not as you expected. I would call it a lesson learned, whatever you take away from it. You could go to the list where they discuss compiling with rpmbuild (not sure which one that is) and see if they can help you out there. houghi -- Come to think of it, there are already a million monkeys on a million typewriters, and Usenet is NOTHING like Shakespeare. -- Blair Houghton -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

That is another way at looking at it :-) . But "learning lessons" by having to spend hours downloading files and therefore using up many MBs from one's monthly download limit is not really the most efficient way of "learning". It only teaches that one must avoid any MS offerings and leave all the 'testing' to others. But this is rather strange as well because I do not recall having this problem (re xine/kaffeine) in earlier betas of oS - ie, before the code word "MS" was introduced. But I am probably wrong.

If you install the source package using, for instance xine-libs, zypper si -r Packman xine-lib then all the necessary devel packages are automatically installed as well. You can search for source packages with zypper se -st srcpackage xine to get a listing of matching source packages and the repository they're in. That's the only catch, when you have to specify a repository zypper looks for the dependencies in that repo. Make sure that your factory source repo is turned off then you can be sure that you will get the source rpm from packman and use "zypper -v si xine-lib" the -v switch ensures you can see which versions you are getting. I would hope that it is not broken on mp3 files. openSuSE's is broken on mp3s for legal concerns.
