I have had a problem now for a week or so where sound in flash plays in firefox or with flashplayer, MPlayer and other stuff plays on /dev/dsp, but other programs report hw:0 or /dev/dsp busy, e.g my SDR programs, so I have had to use hw:1 and hw:2 with those. Previously I was able to use card0 and card1. I have tried closing firefox, opera, konqueror and thunderbird in case they were holding on to it. # cat /proc/asound/cards 0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB HDA ATI SB at 0xf7df8000 irq 16 1 [Live ]: EMU10K1 - SB Live! 5.1 [SB0060] SB Live! 5.1 [SB0060] (rev.7, serial:0x80611102) at 0xb880, irq 20 2 [USB ]: USB-Audio - E-MU 0404 | USB E-MU Systems, Inc. Sounds a bit like trademark PulseAudio behaviour :-| I wonder if PulseAudio was included in the KDE patterns recently, as planned for 11.4: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2010-07/msg00235.html So maybe check if you have PulseAudio installed and running - and please also test that it can be easily removed. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

What do you need OSS for? I think SUSE is the last major distro which even ships that enabled by default. OSS is directly handled by the kernel (in-kernel alsa bridge) and you either use alsa or OSS, if PA claims the alsa device, OSS is busy. OSS should finally die, besides Tejun's cuse-OSS stuff which could in theory provide it in a way it can be handled, it's really no interface that should be used in any recent infrastructure. It's needed for some very old games, and that's why it still can be manually configured -- other than that it should just be ignored.
