[opensuse-factory] TW installation fails with separate /var
All recent snapshots of TW fail when trying to install using a separate partition for /var. The problem is described in https://bugzilla.suse.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1060741. I don't think this is the problem. I have /var on a separate partition too (on several systems) and none of them have problems with recent snapshots. Since the error reported is a segmentation fault, I suspect something else is going on. Have you tried rebuilding the rpm database (rpm --rebuilddb)? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yes. /var/lib/rpm/* -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

/var/lib/rpm/
Unfortunately, rebuilding the rpm database changed nothing; however, it seems that putting /var/tmp on a separate partition would be better than putting all of /var there as I expect to have several versions share that partition. I don't think /var can be shared, it contains "variables", files that depend on each machine. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

Rest assured one cannot share things like '/var/', cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystem_Hierarchy_Standard that reads (excerpt) --------------------------------------------------------------- /var Variable files-files whose content is expected to continually change during normal operation of the system-such as logs, spool files, and temporary e-mail files. --------------------------------------------------------------- I guess when /var is shared between systems that do not run at the same time and run sufficiently same software versions, then things might not too badly fail for spool files and temporary e-mail files (except various inconsistencies (who cares about consistency ;-) and the logs would look more and more strage over time (who cares about logs ;-) Kind Regards Johannes Meixner -- SUSE LINUX GmbH - GF: Felix Imendoerffer, Jane Smithard, Graham Norton - HRB 21284 (AG Nuernberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Doctor..when I share the RPM database across different distributions..it hurts.. do not do that then! why did you expected that to work in the first place ? ;) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

If I had known where the RPM database was located, I obviously would not have shared all of /var. I now only share /var/tmp and all is well. Larry - Live and learn, -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Larry - Live and learn,
Wow, I must have been lucky in the past, sharing /var across openSUSE systems. A learning experience indeed. -- Gertjan Lettink, a.k.a.
