Why so few sheets in the install?
While not be able to see the sheets in action, I have found them on the bootdisk. And as soon I saw the content of the folder I thought: What? So few sheets? The install takes longer then 40 minutes. And we probably use 5 of them.... We have the ideal opportunity to introduce SUSE Linux to new users (other users don't watch it anyway) and all I see is some general information. "You can chat, you can paint, you can fax and this all supported by Novell"..... Why don't we use the sheets in a way the users is attracted to read them? Learning the new users some programs the can use. See it as a movie-trailer that promotes the movie. My proposal is that we promote/explain some key-programs/features of SUSE Linux. Introduce the packagemanager/updater, show some XGL screenshots so they are amazed (even when it is not available for their PC). Make people feel fuzzy for SUSE Linux... This is just a 'brain-fart' so it is not ideal, but it is MORE then we have now. Users allready know they can contact MSN-buddies and they can email. They don't know how slick the programs are. We have enough disk-space, please lets use some of it for more images and more information/sheets..... (otherwise dump some stuff from cd1 to 2 :P) Azerion

Don't promote anything that is not available. Otherwise I like the idea. Something for 10.2 perhaps. It should still not be too long and if there is real info, it should be available at a later moment after you have installed. So what sort of tabs do we have? 1) slideshow 2) programs installing 3) Some readme files 4) Tetris 5) Mini SUSE users course Should be about the maximum, unnless you would want something like DSL running. ;-) Seriously, it would be nice to see if we can use the install time for anything else then it is used now. houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. We just show what Linux can be like. People like to know that. They all have seen the images of Vista and Linux still does have the 'console-thing'-problem. A bit show-off is not that bad.... And for some users it is available.

Indeed, I forgot to post that. We have SUSE Help on the desktop, but maybe a little tutorial would be nicer. Just like the installer-thing.

1+ 5 >> Mini SUSE users course can be combined with the slide-show I guess. Users have to be able to click 'next' themselves. Nothing is more annoying then have to wait till the next slide comes... 3.) We call that release-notes...for the peepz that are interested. 4.) Smile, and a soon if we have connection it uploads the score to the scorelist ;-). Check out how long some dudes will stay behind the desk if that happens. But tetris is not that much fun. Probably 'pong' will be better (and old-school addicting (can you say that?)). *Daddy + Kid * I am installing SUSE Linux kiddy, I will bring you to bed in a few minutes + I know that promise, what are you doing? * I am playing an old game, would you like to try + Sure...tick,,,tick,,,,tick + Hey this is fun. I like SUSE Linux.

Hehehe, no way.

We are totally on the same line. Did some XML-devver allready volunteer? otherwise I can bumb it if you like ;-)

Was sick during the week. I will see how I feel tomorrow and what Time I have left. I must contact the volonteers and see who has already done what. I will probably set up a mailinglist for it to make co-ordination a bit better.
From what I understand, it will be the most flamed list in the universe, because everybofy will have his own idea. :-)
Should be up somewhere next week. houghi -- Nutze die Zeit. Sie ist das Kostbarste, was wir haben, denn es ist unwiederbringliche Lebenszeit. Leben ist aber mehr als Werk und Arbeit, und das Sein wichtiger als das Tun - Johannes Müller-Elmau

I agree: Maybe have some "index.html" on the installation media that refers to the Realease notes and to some "features text (with images)". Regards, Ulrich

And there's too much boring text in a fluvial manner! Like the gates of the word lake have yielded and words are overflowing. If you put up 10 lines of text of "you can do a, and b, and c, and d, and e, and..." people will not remember more than a and b, so the rest is wasted. I suggest to have more slides, but with less text each. Use bullets. One idea/program per slide. (don't say "you can use gimp or kooka to edit photos" in the same slide). Instead use a header "Photo editing" that remains unchanged and describe gimp and kooka in two consecutive slides. Pictures, screenshots of the program. Some SVG animations would be uber cool. Also sound (that can be turned off by the user). I know that sound card detection and configuration is at the end of installation, but maybe there can be some separate auto-configuration, like the LiveDVD does it, especially to have sound during installation. How cool would it be to hear some music and explanations of the stuff shown on screen? You could even use a voice synthetiser, to keep the space requirements low. The "Next Slide" button is a great idea. Now that would be some _marketing_, not the boring text overflow.
Note: You have to use the reply-button if you want to react within the mailing. Now we have 2 of them about the same subject. Original: Why so few sheets in the install? ==========================================

Also a point that I wanted to complain about. I thought it was done by de Dutch translator but if this is the standard....aaaaauch. "You can contact with youre friends, organise youe bussiness, edit photographs, make presentation, etc etc etc" Jut to much.

The ammount doen't have to be changed. The content can be changed so there is more 'real info'

Pretty nice, or if we prefer one sheet you can summarize them with the own title above the summary.

YYup, the eye is requesting some pics.

I thin that is a bit to much. We do not want an extra cd (they eventhink about decreasing it to 3! :/ )

It is :) Azerion

I'd like SUSE to be a featurefull, polished distro with lots of nice functionality and eye candy. That's going to require some more space and resources--fine, it's worthed. Computing resources will always increase and there will always be some people who'll whine that the next version doesn't work anymore on 486 with 16 MB RAM. Well, yeah, so? Progress happens. No Slackware for me, thank you :-) For archaic boxes there are other niche distros, like Damn Small Linux, SLAX etc. I bet that if SUSE would release some version with lots of multimedia, OpenGL desktop, impressive eye candy, all the bells and whistles that require a powerful computer, there would be quite a lot of people (great majority) that would upgrade their systems to be able to see all the nice stuff. A small but vocal number of guys would whine and moan, it's a given, always happens. But that's only a short term fuss, it all goes away quickly.

As said there can be several tabs with different info. The first is a slideshow. If you indeed have a next button, people would not have to wait for the next slide. I am not going to stare at my screen for 45 minutes just to see when the next slide comes. I go and do something else and see nothing. As long as there is a next/previous people will be clicking the buttons like Pavlovs dog (I know I would). Instead of the advertisement (I know it is the best product ever, why do you think I am installing it?) mini one or max two page howto's for the 5/10 most importand programs. Please explain intallation of programs. People have nio idea that they need to use YaST. And explain, with pictures to click here and then there and then this. Please explain the way how to find help with the Lifesaver. Mmm. Must test if placing a 00_houghi.rtf there will show up first. :-) houghi -- Nutze die Zeit.
