After upgrading I started seeing tearing in KDE 5 ( i915 driver, Intel® HD Graphics 4600 on a Lenovo W541 ) at various places. Any hints where I should start digging?

The usual suspect is either kernel or X stack. Try booting with the previous kernel (4.1.3). If the problem is gone, it's obviously a kernel regression.

Thanks. It seems to be gone after a reboot + removal of ~/.local/share/kscreen/* but in case it does come back I'll try booting with the previous kernel.
