[opensuse-factory] PackageKit and updating Tumbleweed
Tumbleweed requires zypper dup for updating the system. PackageKit, the default update notification and software updating tool, does not support zypper dup in its current implementation; this causes a conflict leaving undesirable effect when it is used to update a Tumbleweed system. Here are some ideas suggested on #opensuse-factory: PackageKit exclusion in Tumbleweed is one solution, however, this could leave many systems vulnerable because there would not be notification of critical updates. PackageKit on Tumbleweed could be modified to notify of available updates and direct the user to run zypper dup. PackageKit on Tumbleweed could be implemented to support zypper dup. My $.02 is make the software updater work on TW or remove the software updater from TW and make it obvious what else to do. Any new user is going to think the software updater is there to do what everyone would expect. On Sat, Jun 9, 2018 at 3:02 PM, Franklin Titus <cygnix@opensuse.org> wrote:

I agree that either PackageKit needs to work with Tumbleweed or be removed from Tumbleweed's patterns by default. It is highly confusing for new users and can lead to broken installs very easily. I would go on step further. Make it offer the tumbleweed update/list and revert with a link to the site on the snapshot stability because I can never remember where it is and always forget to bookmark. I would also suggest forking the tumbleweed command and teeing the output just in case the UI breaks in the middle - often you cant logout of KDE after an update when plasma changes so need way to be able to force reboot without init 6 etc

Andrew a trick when plasma menus seem to not work afer upgrade, you should still be able to run runner then type logout or reboot. -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch Bareos Partner, openSUSE Member, fsfe supporter GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Thanks, I will try that. The last time it was the shutdown, reboot, logout box that was crashing after the update due to libraries changing. Of course the real answer is don't upgrade from the UI.

Looks like the right approach! Having the updater dealing with TW is probably the smartest way -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
