I'd just like to share my excitement how fast the openSUSE-10.2-GM-DVD-i386.iso download went this morning.
The corresponding x86_64 torrent is pretty fast, too, quite an improvement from last release.

Same here - well, about 100 KB, the maximum of my adsl link.

Yes, like I said, it won't seed unless you use the torrent file ("obviously"). The links that metalink files provide are just mirrors. If you want to see, grab the .torrent file and seed the already-downloaded ISO that you have. It would be possible to: - start btdownloadcurses - allow it to download for some seconds, and stop it. - notice where it started to put the image, and copy the already downloaded image over it, or symlink it. - start up btdownloadcurses again. Did you use the guru rpm's? I did not have any problems with them. I
download all iso with them, torrent, and ftp. They all worked. I wanted
to make sure all methods worked. I had a high of 600 K on my friends
cable modem. Average was 350-400 K. My own DSL is 1.5/1.0 M down/up. I
get max of 130 K on it.
I know I should have only done it once, but I had to make sure they all
worked. Sorry for the added conjestion. I have now installed it on 14
machines. The slowest was 60 MHz with 128 MB, 750 MB swap. I am
currently running it on a PIII 667 MHz with 128 MB 750 swap. I used the
network text mode install. This is by far the best 10.x release. An is
the fastest. I do have to tame beagle by stoping it, moving the init
file, set it up to run when I am not using the machine, by moving it back
and starting it and running it.

Yes, I did. It is a problem with the client itself (aria2c) or the protocol, not of the package preparer. That client is not reliable. Interesting. As one person thinks it was a waste, a whole horde (I'd say 40+) of people (i.e. yesterday in #suse) wouldn't stop praising it. Probably most patently myself 8). Anyhow, there was a lot of reported success with metalinks (and no such problems as you mention). Metalinks are excellent and I hope that (i) they take as prominent a role in the future with ISO downloads, and (ii) that we can get the aria2 client in by default for 10.3. Nevertheless, as was mentioned support is being added for metalinks to kget (though not until kde4), curl and wget, so that's a step in the right direction. Regards, Francis.

I have seen no such praise here. I will actively dis-recomend it to anybody thinking of using it, at least till I'm convinced problems have been solved. I know why it failed. The protocol is good, but the aria2c implementation is incomplete: it has no segment checking, no error correction, and thus it is not a reliable download program. And I'm warning people to be careful with it, and not to use it as a first choice unawares. Not because it happened to me, but because it will happen again, regardless of being in theory a better protocol. We all know about ftp/http. They have no integrated checking. They can produce incorrect downloads, and do so. But metalink is promoted because it is better and safer: | Metalink is an Open Standard that bundles the various ways | (FTP/HTTP/P2P) to get files into one format for easier downloads. That's | probably already more detail than you want. It's just... Simpler. | Faster. More Reliable. Better. | * Downloads are verified for enhanced reliability. | * Single Point of Failure (SPOF) like FTP or HTTP URLs. More fault | tolerant. That's the promise. But the promise is not fulfilled with the available implementation, and that's why I'm warning people not to trust it. You call that reliable? It is no more reliable than a single http/ftp download.
It is far less reliable than a single ftp/http from a good server if the download method gets chunks from multiple servers of which some are good and some are bad. The unreliabilities of each chunk(-server) are multiplied here. A chunked download without chunked checking isn't worth the bother IMHO.
A single failure proves unreliability. A hundred sucesses do not prove otherwise.
Especially if the single failure is as bad as it possibly can. I had wget once wipe a download for me at the 2GB limit (on 128kbit cable, arrrgh). I didn't use it again for anything serious until that was fixed. Of course, rsync always works reliably and as a bonus, fixes things up too. You call that reliable? It is no more reliable than a single http/ftp download.
It is far less reliable than a single ftp/http from a good server if the download method gets chunks from multiple servers of which some are good and some are bad. exact command. My friends are out for a few days and there computer is
not online for me to quickly gramd the command I used. I do not have the

Ok, edited the wiki now with a direct example case. Tested it with an aria2 download that I stopped at 90%, and it fixed it up just fine. md5sum matched. Regards, Francis.

I would recommend simply "rsync -avv ..." because most servers have a setting of "dont compress = *".
