-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi all: I update my SL from ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/suse with smart, more or less 2 time a week. I see on my /etc/SuSE-release: SUSE Linux 10.1.1 (i586) Pre-Alpha1 VERSION = 10.1.1 I also download the new SL-10.1-alpha1 iso's via torrent and when, for example, search 1 package like MOzillaFirefox I see the same version (MozillaFirefox-1.5.0.4-2) on my sistem and on alpha1-cd2 iso !!! Please,I'd like any explanation about this change on SL versions... Well, actually your system will be "fresher" when you use smart (or rug) to update from the factory inst_source. The CD images will be static at the date you download them until the next published version. The factory tree is updated daily, so you'll have the newest available packages from there. However, sometimes dependencies and versions mismatches between what you have installed to what's in the factory tree. One example would be gcc which is 4.1.1 on CD but 4.1.2 on factory, and kernel packages built with the "old" version may cause conflicts with new stuff you compile with 4.1.2. They usually don't, but in theory they can.. :) -- Anders Norrbring Norrbring Consulting --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory-unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory-help@opensuse.org

When I wrote my first mail was more in relation to than the version that appeared in the file SuSE-release tended to give a mistaken idea of which if was factory... ;) For me,when I read:SUSE Linux 10.1.1 (i586) Pre-Alpha1 is rare I can understand: 10.2 alpha 1. Is not the first time I see this strange names related with SuSE-release file or similar. Regards
