[opensuse-factory] Requesting to create a top level project "Contrib"
Hi, (cross-posting to OBS & Factory) We would like to create a top-level project for third-party packages for openSUSE, named: "Contrib". Our goals is to setup some kind of universal repository for third-party packages. This repository should be viewed as a community-driven extension of Factory, with all standards and limitations applied. Current model of third-party packages for openSUSE is broken in many user's opinion. There are lots of packages across hundreds of Build Service projects, which is hard to download & navigate. Packages are often duplicates, and aren't tested. Current model is good for experimentation and development but is bad idea for deployment. We want to make a new model, which suites deployment & distribution. ... Please don't cross-post. Let's discuss the contrib repository into more detail before going for a repository in the OBS. There's still a lot to do before we're at that stage, really. Let's not put the cart before the horse. [...]

Now that's a good way of getting flamed by people on opensuse-buildservice who didn't read the whole thread on opensuse-factory :)

Umm.. "blah" ? :) Alexey, really, let's keep this topic on -factory first. Either you want a coordinated effort with several contributors or you just rush something badly thought out on your own. If you want the former, then we're not done discussing it. cheers - -- -o) Pascal Bleser <pascal.bleser@opensuse.org> /\\ http://opensuse.org -- I took the green pill _\_v FOSDEM::23+24 Feb 2008, Brussels, http://fosdem.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.5 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQFIp3JGr3NMWliFcXcRAgcqAJ9P/5Qxggcfwj2VYwiyw0q3ZxYBXgCfTMT8 hlCUmmgtxbV/qnKAEt8O8CI= =Xb/m -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Coolo already created it apparently: And gave some hints about how he envisioned the BS practicalities being handled. (#opensuse-project last thursday). <coolo> cb400f: openSUSE:Factory:Contrib was created - I'm maintainer for now, but I'll add as many as necessary. I would suggest to keep the number of people to maintain limited though - and use source links to people's home projects <coolo> (and copy away once 11.1 is done) <coolo> possibly even without their explicit permission <cb400f> ok.. but how would it prevented that people do major breakage one week before release for example? <coolo> cb400f: well, we can copy off early or revert once we notice <coolo> major breakges one week before release is rather the rule than the exception :) <coolo> but I guess the copy off of sources should be done towards beta2 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Not all IRC-chat is done in official meetings or archived, so you'll have to make do with the snippet already posted from my private log. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

It is time to take rest Alexey. Martin copied his IRC log. There was no meeting, just conversation. -- Regards, Rajko http://en.opensuse.org/Portal needs helpful hands. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

We already created openSUSE:Factory:Contrib, which will be the home of the repo. Once we go into release mode of 11.1, we'll fork into openSUSE:11.1:Contrib - I'm maintaining these projects for now and I will add a team of people, once the rules are clear and these rules are used to create a list of packages to take from what home project.
