[opensuse-factory] Is there a way to move "New Tumbleweed snapshot ... released!" to Announce List?

All, Is there a way to move all the automatically generated messages "New Tumbleweed snapshot ... released!" to the Announce List? We could filter by subject, but it would be simpler to have auto-generated messages go somewhere else instead of directly to the developer list. Just a thought. -- David C. Yes [1] [2], if desired although perhaps duplicating the message would be better since the ensuing discussion is generally suited to this list. If you are just looking for notice of new snapshot perhaps see [3] and the RSS feed. The individual entries have links to the mailing list announcement as well. I would personally *love* for this to happen. The RSS feeds that are available for the mailing lists [1] would make it *very easy* to track when new snapshots have been released rather than having to filter through other messges in openSUSE-Factory. Also, I really love boombatower's site, but it does *sometimes* lag behind the new release posts on the mailing list. Not me! New TW SS and Release+1 are the only routine announcements I have any interest in, so no announce list sub, or need for complicated filtering. If they duplicate the messages, I don't think that would hurt what you're doing now at all.

I agree with this, moving all tumbleweed snapshot and or leap pre release snapshots to the announce list would take an intentionally quite list and make it quite noisy, the announce list is frequently used by media etc who want to know about when new openSUSE releases come out but don't care about every tumbleweed snapshot. In the face to face board meeting we discussed the idea of creating a new mailing list for these emails but decided to wait and see how our other mailing list changes went first before moving any further on the idea. But if there is community interest in having these emails go to a separate list such as opensuse-snapshot@ instead of opensuse-factory@ its certainly a change we can make. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adelaide Australia, UTC+10:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B

I like the idea of waiting a bit to see how the new list does, I'd hate to have a list explosion and fragment tumbleweed discussions. I think a RSS feed is more appropriate for users that want a more direct method of new snapshot notifications. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I most certainly do not want it moved. Duplicate, if you wish, somewhere else (not the announce list, though) that I do not need to subscribe to, but keep it the TW snapshot announcements here, as well as the ones we get during the pre-release development stage of Leap. As I move deeper into Yast development, I count on seeing the announcements here. As Peter says, if it is possible, I would like to see:
I would rather suggest to make those mails unreplyable, because the main issue rather is people replying without changing subject (been there myself.....)

Due to the importance of the official announce list (it is the one where most of the media are following what the project is doing) the list is wholly moderated, requiring a human to individually release any mail to that list to ensure only appropriate announcements are made by the project. Given the pace of Tumbleweed updates this will put a dramatic workload increase on our mailinglist admins unless they have a way of auto accepting certain mails - but they will need to continue to filter out ANY discussion because the announce list is not a discussion list, like mentioned it’s for announcements only and is used as such by the world at large. I’m not denying this idea doesn’t have merit, but it’s not as simple as it sounds at first glance.

The announcements themselves could be PGP or otherwise signed, so that allowing them could be automated. The announcement could have a "reply-to" header set to another mail list. Any reply to the announcements on the announcement mail lists would be automatically rejected. That said, I prefer the snapshot messages where they are currently. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. For me (in case I count as "developer"), the compact notice what went into the last snapshot is very valuable information. If these mails are going somewhere else, then, after the bug reporters have finally been driven away, the last bit of useful information on opensuse-factory is removed. -- Stefan Seyfried "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled." -- Richard Feynman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Well the idea would be people who mostly want this information rather then being interested in discussions around openSUSE's future development would be subscribed to that list and not this list, then people working on openSUSE development would have the choice to subscribe to both lists if they wanted all the info or just one if they'd prefer. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adelaide Australia, UTC+10:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B

Greetings, Stephan
The multiple mailing list approach was more a consideration for the fact we were often getting 2 emails a day (tumbleweed and Leap pre release), sometimes each receiving 3-8 follow up emails with users listing the various things that were broken for them. Some users would prefer to see that continue while others don't want these emails on the -factory mailing list, so the alternative to pushing people to bugzilla (what we chose for now) was moving all this to another list. -- Simon Lees (Simotek) http://simotek.net Emergency Update Team keybase.io/simotek SUSE Linux Adelaide Australia, UTC+10:30 GPG Fingerprint: 5B87 DB9D 88DC F606 E489 CEC5 0922 C246 02F0 014B

procmail/notso-smartsieve? How about adding a couple of recipes to the twiki to crib? List users that don't want to see the followup don't have to if they filter brittly on the start of "official" announcements - 'cos if the respondent is too lazy to even change the Subject line when replying they're unlikely to go to the bother of removing the "Re: " that the MUA will insert :) Daniel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
