XEmacs xft support
Hi, I notice in the current factory distribution contains XEmacs 21.5.25. I have also noticed that as of 21.5.24, xft support was added by Stephen J. Turnbull, which allows the use of xft features such as truetype font rendering in XEmacs. Furthermore, I've noticed that the spec file for the xemacs source rpm does not specify the following on its command line: "--with-xft=emacs,gauges,menubars" That would enable xft fonts in XEmacs, which would be a Very Good Thing. I've been using xft-patched versions of XEmacs 21.5 for years (and I'm using one on SuSE 9.2 to write this email), and it's a big improvement. I was going to add this as a feature request in the opensuse bugzilla, but my newly created login isn't working well, so I thought that here would be a good place to mention it, in the hope that the XEmacs package maintainer notices! It would be really nice if this made it in for 10.1, though I imagine it's a bit late for that! It's only a one-line addition to the spec file, so it's not a prob for me to compile it myself in due course, but I think it would be nice if it were switched on by default, since some may not know about it yet! Apologies if this is the wrong forum in which to make such a request (and pointers in the right direction gratefully accepted). -- Bill Gallafent.

Hi,

I discussed this already with Stephen J. Turnbull and he recommended against it. He said that the Xft support is still very experimental and not yet stable enough for regular users. I will enable Xft support in XEmacs probably for SuSE Linux 10.2.
Furthermore, I've noticed that the spec file for the xemacs source rpm does not specify the following on its command line:
"--with-xft=emacs,gauges,menubars"
