[opensuse-factory] What is NM test on conncheck.opensuse.org?
Hi, I noticed this message on 42.2RC2: Nov 14 03:32:39 Minas-Anor NetworkManager[967]: <info> connectivity: check for uri 'http://conncheck.opensuse.org' failed with 'Could not connect: Network is unreachable' I tried the site, it doesn't load. IF NM tests that site, it should be up, and have some content. "links" says there is none. Otherwise, NM should not test for that site, and it is a bug. -- Cheers/Saludos Carlos E. R. Then it contains something, but not what NM expects, because I see the message in the log often. 74 times in 4 hours so far. -- Cheers/Saludos Carlos E. R. I believe "network is unreachable" means that the server cannot be contacted at all, though it is up on my end. Did you try doing the command listed in the message above? (curl -I http://conncheck.opensuse.org) Try it and see if you also get the same message. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

But that message is produced by NM. If I try with FF it does nothing. With "links" it says "No content". NM is probably probing for some specific response and doesn't get it. It doesn't need to be valid html, which apparently is not (judging by what FF does).

Yes, same message. -- Cheers/Saludos Carlos E. R. (testing openSUSE Leap 42.2, at Minas-Anor) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Yes, same message.
It probes if it can reach it and / or if it gets a captive portal. If NM gets a captive portal on this URL, it will display it. Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

The problem is that it writes too many entries to the log saying that 'Could not connect: Network is unreachable'. That's what bothers me, the noise in the log. -- Cheers/Saludos Carlos E. R. E-h-h ... and what if my network does not have Internet connection? How can we disable this check (or change URL)?
it is as simple as that, really.

Well in cat /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf there a connectivity option. And man NetworkManager.conf has some informations about what can be done. CONNECTIVITY SECTION This section controls NetworkManager's optional connectivity checking functionality. This allows NetworkManager to detect whether or not the system can actually access the internet or whether it is behind a captive portal. uri The URI of a web page to periodically request when connectivity is being checked. This page should return the header "X-NetworkManager-Status" with a value of "online". Alternatively, it's body content should be set to "NetworkManager is online". The body content check can be controlled by the response option. If this option is blank or missing, connectivity checking is disabled. interval Specified in seconds; controls how often connectivity is checked when a network connection exists. If set to 0 connectivity checking is disabled. If missing, the default is 300 seconds. response If set controls what body content NetworkManager checks for when requesting the URI for connectivity checking. If missing, defaults to "NetworkManager is online" -- Bruno Friedmann Ioda-Net Sàrl www.ioda-net.ch Bareos Partner, openSUSE Member, fsfe fellowship GPG KEY : D5C9B751C4653227 irc: tigerfoot -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

What exactly should I fix? I posted all those emails using that network, so it works fine. It is broken on openSUSE side, man. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)

Do you have direct connection to Internet? Or are you using proxy?

Direct. Computer <--> router <--> ISP Unless my ISP places a silent, hidden proxy somewhere - they did years ago. Many complains. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 13.1 x86_64 "Bottle" at Telcontar)
