[opensuse-factory] 0install?

Slashdot is running an article on how 0install is now at 1.0 release. Here's their website: http://0install.net/ I've looked at it before but didn't realize they were already close to being out with a stable release. The website correctly shows I'm running opensuse. While zypper is a very powerful and useful tool, I've always found package management on linux to be a huge duplication of effort and storage(ie multiple versions of a program for not only each distro but also for each version of each distro). I haven't noticed anything about this on this list. Is this something that opensuse as a project would be interested in? It looks useful for the buildservice because multiple distros could be supported by one installer. Just curious. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I looked at your site but was not able to find any central list of software available with 0install. Do you have any? jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.youtube.com/user/jdddodinorg http://jdd.blip.tv/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Maybe because they completely ignore the packaging process? Its a way of describing and installing binary packages. It completely ignores the generation of the binary. Just read their developer/packager documentation. I can't find a generic binary for the program I want to package! Popular projects usually provide a "generic" binary tarball, which works on most Linux distributions. This is the best archive to put in the feed. If there isn't one, it might mean that the developers couldn't get a single binary to work on multiple distributions, or it might just mean they haven't tried. That means its nothing else then our one-click-install i think :) Henne -- Henne Vogelsang, openSUSE. not really. It's the 1 clic without root access and distro independant If I understood well (I just discover this) it's an install system that works like RSS (you have a feed from each application) The developper have to setup his own web site (or have one on sourceforge or elsewhere) with binaries and spec file there. 0install manage to download all the binaries (including dependencies) from the web to a "cache" folder (user folder, root access optional) and run it from there. 0install provides tools for the developper to manage this. It could be pretty interesting if it had an "appstore", but I couldn't find one (may not searched enough). The main advantage is that there is only one link, distribution independant (0install is said to be smart enough to cope with this). I don't know if I like really le "no root necessary" feature. jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://www.youtube.com/user/jdddodinorg http://jdd.blip.tv/ -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

And that might (will) be the showstopper! That's one big problem, windows had in the past. Everyone could install everything with all the aftereffects... openSuse made the installation of software quite comfortable with the 1-Click- Install (even though it's controversial discussed). I don't think, it should get "easier" anymore. Cheers, Steven

Packaging existing binaries is one way to use it. However, authors can also use it to publish source archives.
