[opensuse-factory] New package: yast2-journal
I would like to include a new package into Factory: YaST2-Journal. As some people has already reported[1], the switch to systemd has made the "system log" module of YaST less useful that it used to be (unless you install syslog, which brings /var/log/messages back to life). In order to bring the YaST functionality back, while taking advantage of the of the advanced filtering capabilities of the systemd journal, we have developed the new YaST2-Journal module. As you can see in the screenshots [2][3], it displays the log entries in a table with a search box providing grep-like live searching. In addition, it allows to filter the entries in the list by date/time, unit, file or priority. In short, all the advantages of the old (and still present) log viewer with some extra systemd-powered goodies. The package is already hosted in the YaST:Head project, so you can already install it in 13.1, 13.2 and Tumbleweed[4]. If nobody is against, I will create the request for inclusion on Factory next Monday. Last but not least, we are looking for feedback. So if you find a bug or something to improve or if you want to request a feature, please contact the YaST team. Thanks. Great job on the new module. I have to say I like it a lot :) One suggestion for Factory inclusion, remember to adjust the deps/pattern to remove the system log module when this one is presented probably. Cheers Tom

Hi Tom, it is not good idea to force removal of system log module, as it can be used to view different log files not just /var/log/messages. You can view here any log, so e.g. also X logs, so it is still useful module, just messages is not useful. Josef

Don't spread that link! The 2nd heading I read (the one on the right) is an outright lie :) """ Three full-featured interfaces YaST offers two graphical interfaces (Gtk+ and Qt) and a terminal-based interface that is perfect for remote administration. AFAICS Dimstar pings on "Gtk+" which is no longer functional. And, IMHO a web-shell + ncurses interface works better than webyast, at least for me. Still, I'm happy with the new module, and esp happy with the tutorial, which answers some of my open questions on how to do some things in a good, not "just" working, way. Thank you, for the work (and sweat, and blood, and tears) invested. - Yamaban. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
