Just for a try see if /boot/grub/menu.lst has a "vga=" set. If yes change it to "vga=ask" and boot up on it. I had a similar problem. I never found the problem but I think it may have been a lack of nouveau. Mine would just come up with huge letters and then black.
It has the same setting as it has in the working 11.2 partition, ie, 0x317. Letters are correct, just no prompt.
