Call for testers of Leap 15.6 kernel WiFi driver updates
Hi, due to the recent Intel security fixes that need the firmware updates, we'd need to update the kernel drivers for Leap 15.x, and I decided to bump major WiFi driver code to the state of 6.9.x kernel (at least for Leap 15.6). So far, Intel, Atheros and Realtek drivers have been backported, together with the update to the latest linux-firmware tree. (Mediatek is still work in progress). Now I'm looking for volunteers to test those updates before merging to the official tree. The test kernels and firmware packages are found in OBS home:tiwai:kernel:sle15-sp6-wifi repo: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/tiwai:/kernel:/sle15-sp6-wif... If you run a Leap 15.6 system and have those WiFi devices of the vendors above, it'd be appreciated if you can test those packages. Especially testing an Intel AX210 or AX220 would be helpful. Note that the packages above are unofficial builds, hence you'd better to turn off Secure Boot for testing. Thanks! Takashi

Thanks! It's important to know that the update doesn't break for old chips, too. Takashi

does *not* work at all on my Intel Wi-Fi 6 AX210/AX211/AX411 160MHz! I'll send you the logs in private e-mail.
Thanks!

FWIW, just tested the same on TW and NM was able to bring up the same device: # zypper se -s -x -i kernel-default kernel-firmware i+ | kernel-default | package | 6.9.7-1.1 | x86_64 | oss.obs i+ | kernel-firmware | package | 20240618-1.1 | noarch | oss.obs

FWIW, I debugged the bug from the logs Manfred sent to me, and the likely culprit was spotted out. A new kernel is now being built in OBS home:tiwai:kernel:sle15-sp6-wifi-v2 repo. If anyone else also can test AX210/AX220, try *-v2 repo instead (once after the build finishes), too. thanks, Takashi

Hello, Your kernel works fine in the following WiFi device:
00:14.3 Network controller: Intel Corporation Comet Lake PCH-LP CNVi WiFi Subsystem: Intel Corporation Dual Band Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) AX201 160MHz 2x2 [Harrison Peak]
Benchmarking with iperf3 also worked fine, so I think that there is no problem at all. Thanks, On Sun, 14 Jul 2024 12:19:42 +0200 Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de> wrote:

I've just upgraded to TW kernel 6.9.9 (from 6.9.7) and rebooted. well, it would have been much more useful if you had added the repos Takashi mentioned (the v2 one...) to your TW machine and installed the 15.6 kernel from there ;-) Nobody in this thread suggested that the Tumbleweed kernel was not working, but the interesting question was if the drivers from 6.9, backported to 6.4 would still work and not break stuff. -- Stefan Seyfried "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled." -- Richard Feynman

Thank you all for participating tests. The results so far look positive, so I merged the changes to SLE15-SP6 branch now. It'll be included in the next update in August. Takashi
