[opensuse-factory] Lost sound :/
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 After the last tumbleweed update, I've lost sound through my laptop's built-in sound device, and through it's docking station. (This is my first failure ever with Linux audio, so I guess I had it coming.) This is a Dell Latitude E7450, BTW. I know pulseaudio and any underlying subsystems are working - if I plug in a USB audio device it's recognized and usable immediately - so I assume it's a driver issue with my hardware. # lspci -v -s Also, it's interesting what update broke. Please check zypper log what updates were done in the last update. If it's only kernel, you should be able to check to boot the previous kernel easily. thanks, Takashi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I tried booting on the prior kernel (4.5.2-1-default) and it made no change. I did a system rollback with snapper/btrfs to before my last 'zypper up' and it works again, so definitely some update is interfering. I'll do updates more granularly now, and find the culprit to include in my bugreport.
thanks,
Takashi

Hi James, I'm guessing wildly, but it might be possible that adding the following file remedies the issue: $ cat /etc/modprobe.d/50-sound.conf # Force PCH soundcard into slot 0 (the default slot). options snd_hda_intel index=1 On my Latitude E7450, the kernel has a tendency to choose the HDMI audio device by default. The setting cited above fixed that for me. Best regards, Peter -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
Hi James,
obvious one, did you try to restart pulseaudio?
See lower, PA is using 'Dummy output' sink and for some reason your
ALSA sink is no longer known. I think I encountered this problem once,
but I was unable to reproduce it after reboot.

Yes I tried turning it off and on again. I'd like to thing everyone has at the very least done some basic troubleshooting (like rebooting) before hitting this list. - -- James Mason Technical Architect, Public Cloud openSUSE Member SUSE jmason@suse.com -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2 iQEcBAEBCAAGBQJXNhBhAAoJEBs5UYhsRJAjcvkH/jfo7ngjeCTjNSuU0KdFF302 VRwAMH9bpmF5CzdUOCiu/FFEZvHl4yqgqTtx1idHbnMCniS+xkOlNDKtsOw8SMaD 89fLkbPzIIy47x8Gmtn1/1SJMRxEk5ph2LBLMAiWCFpMsTFGO5V+lgHKWSeOYzEX 4h1mjjzv4jDq7XbXhDfGkb1wVdNFtJI0MkCjCRMXuvRVLRSRhvFaTLZ1VIExtgMB 0gK7fHOG3NSwWg7U4ys+aAvz00AGSknnoJPNhgiIqPOFGpFqoJjhH7AOen/i9t1+ J6X8nXPf8bixMsqGVjd97k/kbiiWszvUaAVfU4fzaHw5dpipHSzFka4rJNu2ZVw= =1n3E -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----
