[opensuse-factory] X segfaulting on 12.3 B1?
I've run into a problem with X segfaulting and crashing the Windows manager. This started happening on my 12.2 that was using Factory KDE4,9.97 and 98, and it's also happening on the same hardware with 12.3B1 with KDE4.9.97. Nvidia binary drivers are both 310 and 313, but currently 313.09. I'm not sure what is the root cause.. maybe someone here can help me track it down? On 12.3B1, I can run most desktop apps with no issues, but once in a while, depending on the app, it will crash to the login screen. I've been able to trigger this with Steam Linux (on 12.2 and 12.3), and with VMWare Player (on 12.2... will be testing on 12.3 as soon as I get it installed). The behaviour is the same every time; launch the app, and immediate SegFault. On the previous 12.2 install it only started happening when I updated KDE to 4.9.98. Previously I was running an older version of KDE4.9.X from Factory. I forget the exact build.. I think it was .93. /var/log/messages only contains one line at the time that X crashed (previous line is from several minutes earlier and unrelated): -------------------------------------------------- 2013-01-28T18:18:55.833377+01:00 linux-oqn4 kdm[569]: X server for display :0 terminated unexpectedly -------------------------------------------------- /var/log/Xorg.0.log contains this: -------------------------------------------------- [ 66721.084] (EE) Backtrace: [ 66721.090] (EE) 0: /usr/bin/Xorg (xorg_backtrace+0x36) [0x58f906] [ 66721.090] (EE) 1: /usr/bin/Xorg (0x400000+0x193769) [0x593769] [ 66721.090] (EE) 2: /lib64/libpthread.so.0 (0x7f6374927000+0xf1f0) [0x7f63749361f0] [ 66721.090] (EE) 3: /usr/lib64/libnvidia-glcore.so.313.09 (0x7f636fb79000+0x14dfbd0) [0x7f6371058bd0] [ 66721.090] (EE) 4: /usr/lib64/libnvidia-glcore.so.313.09 (0x7f636fb79000+0x15f409b) [0x7f637116d09b] [ 66721.090] (EE) 5: /usr/lib64/libnvidia-glcore.so.313.09 (0x7f636fb79000+0x15f67a8) [0x7f637116f7a8] [ 66721.090] (EE) 6: /usr/lib64/libnvidia-glcore.so.313.09 (0x7f636fb79000+0x12cec34) [0x7f6370e47c34] [ 66721.090] (EE) 7: /usr/lib64/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so (0x7f637227f000+0x4bb2ad) [0x7f637273a2ad] [ 66721.090] (EE) [ 66721.091] (EE) Segmentation fault at address 0x0 [ 66721.091] Fatal server error: [ 66721.091] Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). I've searched through the Factory bugs... and didn't find anything similar. Yes, this happends frecuently when the nvidia propietary drivers require reinstall because the system has overwrriten one of its changes. run nvidia-installer --uninstall and then reinstall the driver. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

OK, I tried that (switch to console login, uninstall the drivers, reboot just to be sure, install the 313.09 drivers again from console, reboot again). I can immediately trigger the segfault on a previously working game (a Steam game which worked fine in 12.2 until I updated to the latest KDE factory or I installed 12.3B1). No one else running into this? I've tried just about everything I can think of, including uninstalling and reinstalling the Nvidia proprietary drivers (both 310 and 313)... I can still trigger an X segfault pretty easily by launching any game (Steam games, or other Linux native games). All I've got left to try is another 12.3 Window Manager or a roll-back to 12.2 (without installing KDE from Factory). I still can't really discover the "real" root case... it's possible to be the Nvidia drivers, but when this started happening on my 12.2 install, the only thing that changed was a KDE update to 4.9.98 (from 4.9....93 or 89 I think... it was a 4.10 RC). I did not update the kernel or the Nvidia drivers at the time. No I haven't seen that one. It seems to be a slightly different issue though. At this point I've given up with 12.3 Beta1. I could not get it working correctly at all, and zero useful information in the logs, so... no clue where to go with it. Steps for me to duplicated are simple: - Install 12.3 Beta1 - "Fix" the link to version.h so I can install the Nvidia drivers - Install the Nvidia drivers - Segfault X when I try to start Gnome (Gnome won't even launch), or after starting KDE4 and launching an app (eg Skype with screen sharing) If X doesn't segfault in KDE when launching an app, I get terrible screen tearing and corruption on OpenGL apps. The suggestion that something is being overwritten on the Nvidia driver doesn't make sense as nothing else is installed/changed after installing the binary driver, and reinstalling the driver doesn't fix anything. I can duplicate the behaviour on 12.2 with Factory KDE... Haven't tried with Factory Gnome on 12.2. I needed my computer working and stable, so it's no longer running on 12.3 Beta 1. I've got a second machine with a Nvidia card that I can use as a test. If I can find some time this week, I'll have a go at it with 12.3 Beta 1 again (or I'll wait on Beta 2 to see if it was a PEBKAC issue, or a real problem).
