vote on Slowroll name
Hi, I setup a survey to decide if we want to rename Slowroll and to what https://survey.opensuse.org/index.php?r=survey/index&sid=839619 Something like "openSUSE Tumbleweed-Slowroll edition" is nicely descriptive but a bit unwieldy. My plan is to keep this open for some weeks - e.g. until 2023-10-08 Ciao Bernhard M.

No way of adding new options makes it not so great survery. Thanks Michal
Hi, I would personally prefer "Pulsar", which is not available for vote unfortunately. And it might not imply something slow or lagging behind. Stumbleweed might be the most comparable one, so I guess I will vote for it. But it might sound a bit clumsy. I am not sure if clumsy is an attractive attribute of an OS. I found one alternate that seemed like a possibility, but in the end I gave a checkmark only to Slowroll. -- Evolution as taught in public schools is, like religion, based on faith, not based on science. Team OS/2 ** Reg. Linux User #211409 ** a11y rocks! Felix Miata
We've got a town in Central Coast of California whose three word name is turned into "SLO" . . . from a Spanish name. The locals like the ID of "SLO" . . . . Slowroll could either be "Tumble SLO" or "TW-SLO" . . . would be my vote.

The Telegraph plant is another plant that moves: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codariocalyx_motorius OpenSUSE Telegraph and OpenSUSE Tumbleweed As for the names on the existing list, OpenSUSE Driftwood seems quit apt. That's my 2c.

🙂 But picking the right name for Slowroll is a problem. Most of the one's I've seen so far have negative connotations of one sort or another. What name implies slow, methodical, reliable, while at the same time sounding desirable, and worthy? That's why I'm sort of favoring Chicama, which was on the survey. It means a long ocean wave, indeed, the longest surfing wave on Earth. I dare say that most people have never heard of it, so there's no negativity, while if they bother to look it up it's really cool and desirable. Yes, it's not well known, but compare it to something like Ubuntu! Regards, Lew
How about Steady ("direct or sure in movement : unfaltering - a steady hand"), or maybe Steadyroll? It's positive and implies deliberate movement, not necessarily fast or slow. David Walker On September 20, 2023 7:44:34 PM PDT, Lew Wolfgang <wolfgang@sweet-haven.com> wrote:

Having to think about names seldomly produces good names. It's the names that you least thought about and which randomly pop into one's head on an irregular basis that work the best (write such names to a list for later).
What name implies slow, methodical, reliable, while at the same time sounding desirable, and worthy?
Add "lent-" to your "list", and wait for a second suitable fragment to come about (again, don't actively think about one).
What about: - openSUSE Quantum. Because quantum leap. - openSUSE Forward. Because leap forward. Other than that, Driftwood looks OK.

IMHO the name should suggest stability, trustworthiness and/or regularity. My suggestions: - Workhorse - Diamond - Clockwork - Halley - Full Moon Best regards Thomas

Hello, I don't know if the list is final or not but there is a climbing term that I think applies nicely here " Belay - To protect a roped lead climber from falling by controlling the rope; usually involves a belay device. " I like it because it is short, of its meaning (it is a safety mechanism that kicks in only in case of a fall and allows you to recover gracefully) and it sounds a bit like "delay" (which I guess is what actually happens to package updates) Another term closely related is " Bollard - A large block of rock or ice that is used as an anchor to construct a belay. " Best regards

Hi, I agree with this view below. I do not see a reason to consider "Slowroll" "slow" and to name it like something "slow" for the users. I also think that it might be considered rolling a bit haltingly, so I don't consider it necessary to have rolling in the name either. From my perspective the release cycle is increased to 1-2 months (at least this is what I understood), and this doesn't mean something is slow in my point of view, but just having stronger periodic ticks. This is why I prefer "Pulse", but "Clockwork" or "Lighthouse" would be appealing to me as well. If I got wrong what Slowroll actually is - based on the descriptions - feel free to correct me. Yeah. As a reader of the mailing lists, it's clear to me that 'slow' refers to the frequency of updates. But to an outside observer (and potential user) 'slow' could easily imply that the OS slows down the computer. So IMHO it's better to avoid 'slow' for naming. From your list, I also like 'Lighthouse'. Best regards Thomas

It's not easy coming up with a name for a distribution that either doesn't imply some deficiency in itself or in its siblings. (On reflection, Tumbleweed is not, in some respects, a great name: something that repeatedly falls over and is a nuisance. However, it does fit with the idea of a rolling release.) Of the suggestions here in the replies, I quite like Christian Lanig's "Pulsar" - strong, short, simple, not negative, and implies regularity. The best I can come up with is "Swissroll", which I think has some positive connotations and could also lend itself to a nice spiral logo. -- Stephen J Henstridge
For me, it's a bit like an escalator... constantly rolling upwards at a steady, slow speed. KaiRo On 9/20/23 19:09, Bernhard M. Wiedemann wrote:

I closed the vote today as there were already over 1000 votes in. Here is what names people liked: * 46.33% Slowroll * 25.91% Driftwood * 21.04% Snowroll * 20.51% Drift * 16.36% Wave * 13.44% Orbit * 12.56% Lunar * 12.47% Tide Numbers add up to above 100% because people could like multiple choices. So we stay with the established name "Slowroll". Ciao Bernhard M.
