[opensuse-factory] installing opensuse 11.3 64 bit as a virtual box
I'm trying to install 11.3 as a virtual box (sun vbox ose) running under 11.2 64 bit, my machine is lenovo T61 64 bit. I'm setting the iso image as the cdrom. when first starting up i get a popup message: "VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration has been enabled, but is not operational. Your 64-bit guest will fail to detect a 64-bit CPU and will not be able to boot. Please ensure that you have enabled VT-x/AMD-V properly in the BIOS of your host computer." with the options to quit or continue. if I choose continue the boot splash come on with the various boot options but immediately i get a message: "This is a 32-bit computer. you can not use 64-bit software on it." I've installed many virtual boxes in the past so I know what I'm doing. any ideas? -- Shalom www.tikalk.co -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Have you tried following the instructions it gives you? Is VT-X enabled in your BIOS? Believe it or not, the message is correct ... 64-bit will not work on VirtualBox without VT-X regardless of the host os. ok, never had to do that before, in vbox setting system tab I see an option 'Enable VT-x/AMD-V' which is selected. I'll try the bios later today. Thanks. Shalom www.tikalk.com On 05/05/2010 10:32 AM, Tejas Guruswamy wrote:

Thanks.
to bootup 64 bit system in vbox you have to have hw virtualization, you could check vmx or svm flag for this in /proc/cpuinfo: egrep "(vmx|svm)" /proc/cpuinfo -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
ok, I got it working by enabling VT-X in the bios. I must say I really likes the desktop and the default sonar theme in 11.2 , but now i see 11.3 looks like a plain gnome desktop, is this going to change? Shalom www.tikalk.com On 05/05/2010 10:32 AM, Tejas Guruswamy wrote:

It's a bug. See Most Annoying Bugs [1]. Cheers, Magnus http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Most_Annoying_Bugs_11.3_dev#GNOME
