[opensuse-factory] why three kernel rpm on 11.1 system? how to apply kotd package(s)?

hi there, i am wondering why i have there kernel rpm packages installed on my opensuse 11.1 system? i think it used to be only one kernel rpm package still back in opensuse 11.0 atm i have: kernel-pae-base-2.6.27.7-9.1 kernel-pae-extra-2.6.27.7-9.1 kernel-pae-2.6.27.7-9.1 and i wanted to fool around with kotd a bit. i suppose i need to look at the "pae" named rpm files in http://ftp.suse.com/pub/projects/kernel/kotd/SLE11_BRANCH/i586/ in what way and in what order do i apply those newer pae rpm packages from the kotd directory above? its been a while since my last manual kernel package installations. is there any current howto or best-practices document about opensuse kernels as of 11.1 or factory? i dont seem to find any kind of kotd documentation and i fail to find about the reason and origin why we are having three kernel packes in 11.1 installed. thanks for pointers explanations. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Hi, three kernel is for separate module dependencies. Base package contain base kernel, which is good in virtualized enviroment (e.g. reiserfs is not in kernel). Default is with more modules and extra contain more modules. As I don't develop kernel I don't know exactly what package contain what modules. So dependency is base <- (default) <- extra JR -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

ummmm, 'kay, thanks for the quick hint guess, i need to take a look at all those rpm parameters maybe i can find out which rpm package needs which other and how this all works. still a document or a discussion thread about kotd would also be usefull. or is there a separate opensuse mailnglist that also handles the kotd ones? thanks. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

There is the opensuse-kernel@o.o mailing list which all the kernel team is subscribed to (I believe). IIRC there was a discussion on there about the splitting of the kernel if you check the archives. Yes.
rpm -Uhv kernel-pae-*.rpm will do the trick if you want to run rpm by hand after downloading the 3 rpms.
I think this has already been answered, and if you have further questions about it, please feel free to ask on the opensuse-kernel mailing list. hope this helps, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
