[opensuse-factory] gcc 4.6.0 in Tumbleweed
Are there any plans to push gcc 4.6.0 in Tumbleweed (now or later)? I haven't tried it yet, so I can't guarantee it is stable enough. Thanks, Marco Poletti -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

As gcc or as gcc46? It's not even the default in Factory yet. - -Jeff - -- Jeff Mahoney SUSE Labs -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v2.0.17 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Using GnuPG with SUSE - http://enigmail.mozdev.org/ iEYEARECAAYFAk229VcACgkQLPWxlyuTD7Jq6QCfdYMFMbJ4QdfOEtky4nPgp8fi LeIAnAkDfyvQShVcr8IPEyF/TSj6ktDI =c/BH -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I'm interested in both plans (if any). Note that I'm not saying it should be pushed right now, I just ask when (approx.) it will be included. Marco Poletti -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Note, if a package isn't even in Factory, it will not go to Tumbleweed, that wouldn't make much sense, right? Is there a specific reason why you want gcc 4.6.0 in Tumbleweed? I have thought about it but was not going to even consider it until after it had survived a lot of testing in Factory. thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

GCC 4.6.0 as it is in Factory now is simply a new package (it won't
replace the system compiler unless you also pull the 'gcc' package
from Factory after the default compiler transition happened there).
That said, pulling GCC 4.6.0 into Tumbleweed will cause system
libraries like libgcc and libstdc++ to be updated once there is
a package that requires the new symbol versions or once the user
installs GCC 4.6 packages. This already happened in Factory about
one and a half month ago. Unfortunately people are slow fixing
fallout of a switch (see openSUSE:Factory:Staging:Gcc46) and I
don't have too much time for pushing myself.
Richard.

You can install it from devel:gcc if you want. Ciao, Marcus -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

You shouldn't add other buildservice repositories if you use Tumbleweed, right? Otherwise, I fear the next «zypper dup» will do the wrong thing. Marco Poletti -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

How would it do the "wrong" thing? Yes, if you don't know what you are doing, it could get really messy, but the version number should always be higher so things should work just fine. It's just that you are on your own for support :) thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Ciao, Marcus
I have installed it on my stable 11.4 install and it seems to be fine. Ive done a number of test compiles on various apps and no issues so far. The caveat is libgcc gets replaced.
