Fwd: [opensuse-factory] Fwd: New DE : Mate
We follow the same schema as gnome project and in the future, we probably drop some core packages ( libraries ) for maintenance facilities. There is a large desire for Mate actually in every "big" distributions. We probably should answer this demand. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Mate has its place in openSUSE to have testboth, gnome 3 classic and Mate, you can not compare, Mate is more ergonomic and it is much easier to do what you want with it. cordially jluce -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Please don't get me wrong - while I might disagree with the need for MATE and fail to see any benefit it brings to the distribution, if there is an number of people who want to maintain MATE in openSUSE I wish them all the best, and as one of the maintainers of our GNOME packages & libraries, I'm looking forward to working with them We don't all have to agree on everything in order to make openSUSE better, we just have to get along when we don't see eye to eye ;) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
Please don't get me wrong - but that's all up to personal preference I don't see a need for GNOME (as is with gnome-shell) - there is KDE... 2013/9/17 Richard Brown <RBrownCCB@opensuse.org>:

I have try lxde and xcfe ( I prefer xcfe ) and honestly I don't see in these two products a real alternative to Gnome. Mate is powerfull, easy to use and should make happy a part of Gnome deserters. We discuss about lxde unmaintenance on this maillist, is Mate a good deal ? Yes I think. I just ask for a quick response due to features freeze.

<snip> Jokes aside, why can't live cd/usb images be made rather than DVD's anyway? A live image with Desktop X, UEFI/secure boot ready and negate the need for a DVD download? To be honest it would be nice to see a forum presence of the DE maintainer(s) any desktop introduced with openSUSE as part of the requirements of shipping such desktop on the DVD. Or a designated person to either highlight an issue back to the maintainers... -- Cheers Malcolm °¿° SUSE Knowledge Partner (Linux Counter #276890) openSUSE 12.3 (x86_64) GNOME 3.8.4 Kernel 3.7.10-1.16-desktop up 1 day 12:26, 3 users, load average: 0.06, 0.07, 0.23 CPU Intel® B840@1.9GHz | GPU Intel® Sandybridge Mobile -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Any live image needs to provide some applications. Without them, it doesn't make sense. Now make a list of application, you need to provide and you will see: They don't fit on a CD any more. The only thing that still works with a CD is to provide an installation (only) system . And todays USB thumb drives begin at 4GB size. So it doesn't make sense to provide(USB) images smaller than 4GB. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Hi OK, a live bootable USB image < 1GB, that has UEFI/Secure capabilities and minimal applications, then at some point users can add as required.
A lot of the newer Ultrabooks don't have cd/dvd players, I pull them out and use HDD caddies instead. There are still folks out there who have next to no internet access, dial-up, low monthly caps, use the local library etc that can'r download large images in one hit. Even though I have no such issues internet wise, I use UEFI and Secure boot and don't do update installs. It's a pain to have to download the DVD to install.... -- Cheers Malcolm °¿° SUSE Knowledge Partner (Linux Counter #276890) openSUSE 12.3 (x86_64) GNOME 3.8.4 Kernel 3.7.10-1.16-desktop up 0:04, 3 users, load average: 0.21, 1.13, 0.65 CPU Intel® B840@1.9GHz | GPU Intel® Sandybridge Mobile -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
