[opensuse-factory] update to RC1 with add on source fails
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I have an 10.1 test partition that I intended to dedicate to testing the update to 10.2 RC1, but it failed. As add on source, I enter: <ftp://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/> I get the error (hand copied): <Unknown source type xxx ftp://ftp.opensuse.org/%2fpub/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/> I select retry, get a different bigger dialog box (the one that allows for login/pass/anonymous), choose http this time, and I get almost the same error, less the %2f: <Unknown source type xxx ftp://ftp.opensuse.org/pub/opensuse/distribution/SL-OSS-factory/inst-source/> I switch to a text console, and I try "ping ftp.opensuse.org", getting "unknown host...". I then type "ifconfig", and I see that only the "lo" network interface is active. How come? How can I add an add on URL source, if the network has not being activated yet, and I see nowhere where I can activate it? (The 10.1 install,, that I had run previously to create a new test partition with this update test in mind, had detected the network fine: dns, connectivity test, et all) I was told here that this type of add on source was working, last october, by Andreas Hanke (<http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2006-10/msg00355.html>). Also, Andreas Jaeger says it is possible, but in a way I do not understand how to do: <http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2006-10/msg00334.html> - -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) Comment: Made with pgp4pine 1.76 iD8DBQFFbzBdtTMYHG2NR9URAu7zAJ4+t1M3B0pY7WEZrpNX9UzUC9kzGACgiZIK LuoaTsdQuU2a7N0RlbDu3oA= =+mnD -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Yeah, you're right. That was too fast. I don't know how to bring the network up because I don't know why it's down. But once it's up and running, don't even think of adding ftp.opensuse.org. I'm doing an update or upgrade from 10.1 to 10.2-RC1 - it is not a fresh install (the 10.1 is a test partition installed almost on purpose to test this procedure). This is important: it is not a fresh install. It is an update of an already installed system. I'm testing the 10.1 to 10.2 update. Many configuration questions are skipped by the installer program, becauseit only has to look at the installed old system to know them. Boot from 10.2-RC1 DVD, get to the question of what I want to do, select update system, click on add on sources, and a bit further on, it requests me to add those sources. Fails to add them, no network yet. This is before the window where the info of what it is going to install/update/whatever appears. I had to cancell the add on sources to get to the next window, but there is nothing about network there. So I aborted, and I await for instructions :-} - -- Cheers, Carlos E. I hope this has been already fixed, we currently have an RC4. Anyway, you can run it again and start the network manually before you try to add that additional source: See this http://en.opensuse.org/YaST_Tips Ctrl+Shift+X -- opens xterm (`exit` or `Ctrl+d` to close it) or Ctrl+Alt+F2 -- switches from Qt to console (Alt+F7 to go back) then type `rcnetwork start` and see what happens ;) Dunno, maybe you have configured your network interface to shut down (but I doubt you did). What??? On <http://en.opensuse.org/Development_Version> only the RC1 is mentioned. To make sure, I had a look at ftp.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/distribution/, and there is only an openSUSE-10.2-RC1 directory, no RC2..4 anywhere. Are you perhaps confusing the Beta 4 with the release candidate?

Are you sure you can run such a thing when only the install system from the DVD is running? Shouldn't the network be automatically started by the install system before requesting to add network sources? Have you tested to know if what you are recommending is feasible? I have my doubts you know what you are suggesting... Anyway... I have mounted the install system to check: nimrodel:/mnt # mount -o ro,loop=/dev/loop1 /mnt/dvd/boot/i386/root /mnt/isodvd/ nimrodel:/mnt # ls /mnt/isodvd/etc/init.d/n* /mnt/isodvd/etc/init.d/nfs nimrodel:/mnt # ls /mnt/isodvd/sbin/rc* /mnt/isodvd/sbin/rcopen-iscsi So... No, I'm pretty sure that, at least, RC2 has been tested by the openSUSE community. Some of e-mails here on the mailing-list have RC2 in their subject.

Ah, I see, I had overlooked that this was in inst-sys, sorry for that. Misunderstanding: I thought you were mentioning adding extra-sources after your network is configured and tested. Anyway, if you boot from CD or DVD you should not get any network-related option in "New Add-On Configuration" dialog (or how is it called) such as SLP, HTTP, FTP etc. But if you still want to have network configured during the first-stage installation (int-sys), use a Linuxrc parameter "DHCP=1" at the boot-screen menu ... or you can set a static address using "HostIP=192.168.1.100 Netmask=255.255.255.0 Gateway=192.168.1.1 Nameserver=192.168.1.2 DHCP=0 UseDHCP=0 Domain=your.domain" Of course :) with your own settings... There is no such thing in the torrents. Maybe in the factory tree, once the RC is installed.
So... I was right. There is no "network" or "rcnetwork" init script in the install system.

It certainly proposes an URL (and local directories etc). If there is no support for URLs, ie, external sources, then it should be removed from the option list. Notice that I'm testing this procedure on purpose, because I was told here that it should work. I have created a new 10.1 partition with the idea in mind of testing this thing. But it seems it was not true that the procedure was ready. Very dissapointing, I have been waiting months to test this. :-(
But if you still want to have network configured during the first-stage installation (int-sys), use a Linuxrc parameter
"DHCP=1"
at the boot-screen menu ... or you can set a static address using
"HostIP=192.168.1.100 Netmask=255.255.255.0 Gateway=192.168.1.1 Nameserver=192.168.1.2 DHCP=0 UseDHCP=0 Domain=your.domain"
The eth0 interface is down at that stage, not even an IP will work - unless those entries above makes it initialize the network first.
Of course :) with your own settings...
Of course - but they are almost correct, as a matter of fact :-)
You can consult these (or other) Linuxrc parameters with this document: http://en.opensuse.org/Linuxrc
Nice. But most of the parameters there are undocumented, like the one labeled "network".

Very interesting list, but it seems it's incomplete - I remember there's a hotkey for a (more or less) screen saver for example ;-) It would also be nice if you find some time to explain the options (on the wiki page) - for example, I don't know what this macro recorder is useful for. That said: I'd like to request another hotkey (proposal: Shift-F1) that displays a box showing all available hotkeys. (Yes, seriously. You (as a YaST developer) might know all available hotkeys, but most people don't know them. And such a list directly available in YaST would help a lot.) Regards, Christian Boltz --

The idea was talked about here last October: <http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2006-10/msg00355.html> <http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2006-10/msg00334.html> It consists on having two sources during the install/upgrade, one the DVD, another a remote site FTP/HTTP. The purpose is to be able to install/upgrade those packages that are not in the main install media. An installed system usually has packages that are not included on the DVD, but were installed by Yast from ftp servers. When upgrading the system from one version to the next, using the "small" dvd (compared with the double layer comercial dvd) those packages that are not in the media are simply removed. The idea is to get those missing packages from the network. I had asked if that feature was intended, and Andreas Hanke told me it was already there, by means of the add on media option. Andreas Jaeger seemed to confirm it. Now it is obvious that this does not work. It is impossible, as network has not been initialised at that stage. :-/ I understand that Lukas Ocilka says that it has been solved in RC4, but I see no RC4 DVD in the torrents, so it is untestable. Maybe Novell employees have access to the RC4 DVD and can test the feature, but I can't. Even if the torrent were made available, there would be no time to download, burn, and test it. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. It consists on having two sources during the install/upgrade, one the DVD, another a remote site FTP/HTTP.
I understand that Lukas Ocilka says that it has been solved in RC4, but I see no RC4 DVD in the torrents, so it is untestable. Maybe Novell employees have access to the RC4 DVD and can test the feature, but I can't.
Even if the torrent were made available, there would be no time to download, burn, and test it.
Briljant idea..that way you would have all the packages availlable... Somehow the RC's aren't numbered... Pity it does not work...indeed.. Because it would be much faster as the network install, which i personaly never got to work... Exactly! :-) Now the question is how to get that to work as intended, and when. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Yes, time gets awfull short though....! I am updating my 64bit now, only 48 packages... Must be RC3>RC4 than... I do not like unclear things like these very much, often seen when deadlines come very close.... filed a bug this afternoon, hope it is not common: 225245. I am short of a capable monitor to watch what is realy happening in the system, top is not enough... Just thinking aloud, I wonder if going into VC and configuring the network manually or by dhcp would be a way around. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... No, it is much worse than that: the eth0 interface is not up, ifconfig only lists "lo". Not because there is a problem with the network, but because the install hasn't even tried to activate it at that point. What is VC, anyway? A console? - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
