« It turns out the RAID5 and RAID6 code for the Btrfs file-system's built-in RAID support is faulty and users should not be making use of it if you care about your data. »
It is "btrfs built-in raid", thus not the traditional Linux software raid implementation.
Right. And that's why for SUSE Linux Enterprise we have a defined support matrix for those who want to use soft-raid:
- MD RAID is recommended (including RAID5) - DM RAID is supported, but not recommended - btrfs built-in RAID is supported for RAID 0/1, but not RAID 5/6 - btrfs _is_ supported on top of MD RAID and DM RAID, as are the other major filesystems.
Ah, very clarifying table, thanks :-)
The non-support for btrfs RAID 5/6 is coded in the Kernel (see Jeff Mahoney's mail to this topic), the switch can be overwritten at runtime.
It might be worth thinking, if LEAP and Tumbleweed should copy the mechanisms to prevent people from using the btrfs internal RAID 5/6 code (=use the existing kernel patch).
