[opensuse-factory] Last JBIG patent expired today!
The last JBIG patent expired today. See: http://www.lightbluetouchpaper.org/2012/04/04/one-line-software-patent/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jbig This means we jbigkit can be included in openSUSE and JBIG support can be enabled in Splix. I assume the legal team will still need to take a look at this. There is a jbigkit package in OBS:Graphics. Is it stable enough to be submitted to factory? Please fill a bug report against the legal component so it is reviewed by people that understand this huge mess in the patent system. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
I've been building and packaging it for tiff for Hylafax+ for a couple years. Actually I supplied and maintain that one in the graphics repo. No problems but I also never actually USE the jbig support specifically. I use the tiff and ghostpdl and hylafax+ all with jbig support enabled, a lot and in heavy production, but not specifically jbig faxes or pdfs so far. I just know the upstream jbig-kit code has hardly changed in years. -- bkw On 4/4/2012 1:31 PM, Joseph Mulloy wrote:

btw I'll fix that Factory build error today sometime... It's really just a packaging error not a build error. Also it's available for a lot more target OS versions than just the last 2. https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?package=jbig-kit&project=home%3Aaljex -- bkw -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
