[opensuse-factory] Unable to build vboxguest using VBoxGuestAdditions_6.0.12 against the 5.3.12-2-default kernel on a fresh installation of TW
Hello I am unable to build the vboxguest module on a fresh installation of TW[1] guest which is using the 5.3.12-2-default kernel [1] installed using the openSUSE-Tumbleweed-DVD-x86_64-Snapshot20191227-Media.iso When I install the VirtualBox Guest Additions it sayes : Look at /var/log/vboxadd-setup.log to find out what went wrong When I look at vboxadd-setup.log is what I see this gcc -Wp,-MD,/tmp/vbox.0/r0drv/linux/.mp-r0drv-linux.o.d -nostdinc -isystem /usr/lib64/gcc/x86_64-suse-linux/9/include -I/usr/src/linux-5.3.12-2/arch/x86/include -I./arch/x86/include/generated -I/usr/src/linux-5.3.12-2/include -I./include -I/usr/src/linux-5.3.12-2/arch/x86/include/uapi -I./arch/x86/include/generated/uapi -I/usr/src/linux-5.3.12-2/include/uapi -I./include/generated/uapi -include /usr/src/linux-5.3.12-2/include/linux/kconfig.h -include /usr/src/linux-5.3.12-2/include/linux/compiler_types.h -D__KERNEL__ -Wall -Wundef -Werror=strict-prototypes -Wno-trigraphs -fno-strict-aliasing -fno-common -fshort-wchar -fno-PIE -Werror=implicit-function-declaration -Werror=implicit-int -Wno-format-security -std=gnu89 -mno-sse -mno-mmx -mno-sse2 -mno-3dnow -mno-avx -m64 -falign-jumps=1 -falign-loops=1 -mno-80387 -mno-fp-ret-in-387 -mpreferred-stack-boundary=3 -mskip-rax-setup -mtune=generic -mno-red-zone -mcmodel=kernel -DCONFIG_X86_X32_ABI -DCONFIG_AS_CFI=1 -DCONFIG_AS_CFI_SIGNAL_FRAME=1 -DCONFIG_AS_CFI_SECTIONS=1 -DCONFIG_AS_SSSE3=1 -DCONFIG_AS_AVX=1 -DCONFIG_AS_AVX2=1 -DCONFIG_AS_AVX512=1 -DCONFIG_AS_SHA1_NI=1 -DCONFIG_AS_SHA256_NI=1 -Wno-sign-compare -fno-asynchronous-unwind-tables -mindirect-branch=thunk-extern -mindirect-branch-register -fno-jump-tables -fno-delete-null-pointer-checks -Wno-frame-address -Wno-format-truncation -Wno-format-overflow -Wno-address-of-packed-member -O2 --param=allow-store-data-races=0 -Wframe-larger-than=2048 -fstack-protector-strong -Wno-unused-but-set-variable -Wimplicit-fallthrough -Wno-unused-const-variable -fno-var-tracking-assignments -g -gdwarf-4 -pg -mrecord-mcount -mfentry -DCC_USING_FENTRY -fno-inline-functions-called-once -flive-patching=inline-clone -Wdeclaration-after-statement -Wvla -Wno-pointer-sign -Wno-stringop-truncation -fno-strict-overflow -fno-merge-all-constants -fmerge-constants -fno-stack-check -fconserve-stack -Werror=date-time -Werror=incompatible-pointer-types -Werror=designated-init -fmacro-prefix-map=/usr/src/linux-5.3.12-2/= -fcf-protection=none -Wno-packed-not-aligned -Wno-declaration-after-statement -fno-pie -include /tmp/vbox.0/include/VBox/VBoxGuestMangling.h -I/usr/src/linux-5.3.12-2/include -I/tmp/vbox.0/ -I/tmp/vbox.0/include -I/tmp/vbox.0/r0drv/linux -D__KERNEL__ -DMODULE -DRT_WITHOUT_PRAGMA_ONCE -DVBOX -DRT_OS_LINUX -DIN_RING0 -DIN_RT_R0 -DIN_GUEST -DIN_GUEST_R0 -DIN_MODULE -DRT_WITH_VBOX -DVBGL_VBOXGUEST -DVBOX_WITH_HGCM -DVBOX_WITH_64_BITS_GUESTS -DRT_ARCH_AMD64 -DMODULE -DKBUILD_BASENAME='"mp_r0drv_linux"' -DKBUILD_MODNAME='"vboxguest"' -c -o /tmp/vbox.0/r0drv/linux/mp-r0drv-linux.o /tmp/vbox.0/r0drv/linux/mp-r0drv-linux.c /tmp/vbox.0/r0drv/linux/mp-r0drv-linux.c: Dans la fonction « VBoxGuest_RTMpOnAll »: /tmp/vbox.0/r0drv/linux/mp-r0drv-linux.c:287:18: erreur: la valeur void n'a pas été ignorée comme elle aurait dû l'être 287 | int rc = smp_call_function(rtmpLinuxAllWrapper, &Args, 0 /* wait */); | ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ /tmp/vbox.0/r0drv/linux/mp-r0drv-linux.c: Dans la fonction « VBoxGuest_RTMpOnOthers »: /tmp/vbox.0/r0drv/linux/mp-r0drv-linux.c:341:8: erreur: la valeur void n'a pas été ignorée comme elle aurait dû l'être 341 | rc = smp_call_function(rtmpLinuxWrapper, &Args, 1 /* wait */); | ^ make[3]: *** [/usr/src/linux-5.3.12-2/scripts/Makefile.build:282: /tmp/vbox.0/r0drv/linux/mp-r0drv-linux.o] Error 1 make[2]: *** [/usr/src/linux-5.3.12-2/Makefile:1641: _module_/tmp/vbox.0] Error 2 make[1]: *** [../../../linux-5.3.12-2/Makefile:179: sub-make] Error 2 make: *** [/tmp/vbox.0/Makefile-footer.gmk:111: As a result when I open the "User and Group management" module using yast2 on TW, I can only select and add the vboxsf option for my user and my shared directories which are provided via a 15.1 host are not available - unless I open a console and cd into them using the root user. James, We do not support the VirtualBox Guest Extensions. That is software provided by Oracle, mostly for Windows users. That functionality is provided for most Linux distros in their package. For openSUSE, the guest modules are part of our virtualbox-kmp-default package. It is possible that the snapshot in question did not contain the VBox modules for kernel 5.3.12-2-default. Although that should not happen, the build software at OBS is rather complicated, and subtle bugs may allow this situation to happen; however, when I did a 'sudo zypper dup' on the TW guest that I use for testing, the correct kmp package was there. I would expect that updating your VM would fix the problem. On kernels as new as 5.3.12, the vboxvideo and vboxguest modules are built into the kernel, thus the only one needed from our build is vboxsf. When qou have VBox module problems, a supported work-around is to use 'sudo /sbin/vboxconfig' to build the host modules for openSUSE systems, and 'sudo /sbin/vboxguestconfig' to build guest modules. If you do not have the necessary requisites installed, the scripts will prompt you with the installation command. If one of these scripts fails, then report it as an openSUSE bug. I hope this discussion helps in getting your system running correctly. Larry

I quickly checked my local TW installation, and it seems that the vboxguest module is still provided by the virtualbox-kmp package $ sudo modinfo vboxguest | grep '^filename:' filename: /lib/modules/5.3.12-2-default/extra/vboxguest.ko $ rpm -qf /lib/modules/5.3.12-2-default/extra/vboxguest.ko virtualbox-kmp-default-6.0.14_k5.3.12_2-4.2.x86_64 Is that intended?
