[opensuse-factory] Clean install of Tumbleweed on new computer
On opensuse.org you can only download a DVD for the current release. If one wants to install Tumbleweed cleanly on a new computer, do I have to first install the current release and the install Tumbleweed on top of it? Is this the way for a new machine that should get Tumbleweed? thanx Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

You can add Tumbleweed as an add-on repository during installation. Ok, but just adding http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed/standard/ is not enough? I still would need http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-current/repo/non-oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-current/repo/oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/update/openSUSE-current/ http://download.opensuse.org/update/openSUSE-non-oss-current/ You need all 5 from above for Tumbleweed? And, what ist the difference between repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed and distribution/openSUSE-current ? Is the "current" not Tumbleweed? To resolve a few misunderstoodments: 1. Tumbleweed builds UPON openSUSE-current, it does NOT replace openSUSE-current. 2. in zypper the following applies to priorities: The LOWER the number, the HIGHER the repo priority. So, YES, you need ALL FIVE repos mentioned above, and IF you change the priorites away from their default (99) then in the following way: Prio | Repo-url ================ 99 | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-current/repo/oss/ 99 | http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-current/repo/non-oss/ 98 | http://download.opensuse.org/update/openSUSE-current/ 98 | http://download.opensuse.org/update/openSUSE-non-oss-current/ 97 | http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed/standard/ Any questions left? And "current" is currently 12.3 :-)

There is also a Tumbleweed portal, at <http://en.opensuse.org/Tumbleweed>, where all these things are explained. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. In your example openSUSE:/Tumbleweed has higher priority than the update repos, shouldn´t the update repos have higher priority? Ok, Tumbleweed sits on top of the current distribution. So, once openSUSE 13.1 is availabe, the "tumbleweeded" system updates to 13.1 and on top the Tumbleweed packages get installed? This is the concept? So, I always have the current stable distribution plus Tumbleweed stuff? thanx Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Current is basically just a "symbolic link". It currently points to 12.3, so you can use direct references to 12.3 during the install, then change to point to the meta-version "current" after the fact. "Current" will get relinked to 13.1 when it goes gold in the fall. Greg -- Sent from my Android phone with K-9 Mail. Ok, does this mean Tumbleweed is installed on top of the current distribution? Is this the concept? So, the packages are taken from "current" which actually is the current distribution e.g. 12.3 and then the Tumbleweed repo installs the specific newer Tumbleweed packages on top? Once 13.1 is out, 13.1 gets installed from "current" and again from Tumbleweed repo the Tumbleweed packages gets installed, is this the way TW works? A very intersting approach. Why not make Tumbleweed the standard installation for openSUSE? The users would always have a current version, no need to manually update the distribution. Always an up to date system, just great. Malte -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Because not all people want to run Tumbleweed. If you want to create an install image that has the Tumbleweed repos as the default ones, please do so (Studio should be able to create this for you), but I don't have the time or energy to create or maintain such a thing, sorry. thanks, greg k-h -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Dear Greg, You seem to be the most knowledgeable participant in this interesting discussion. I seem to understand the gist of the discussions but there is one practical point I would like to clarify. The running version should/could be replaced by current. That seems the gist of the story if you want to automatically progress to 13.x and so on. But if I replace in my case 12.3 by current it does not recognize this new URL. What would be the precise content of my yast repositories to achieve this? -- Linux User 183145 using KDE4 and LXDE on a Pentium IV , powered by openSUSE 12.3 (i586) Kernel: 3.9.4-11.g51bf0ff-default KDE Development Platform: 4.10.3 "release 565" 12:49pm up 12:50, 2 users, load average: 1.16, 0.91, 1.04 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

What do you mean with "it does not recognize the new URL"? The URLs you have to add are these: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/openSUSE:/Tumbleweed/standard/ http://download.opensuse.org/update/openSUSE-current/ http://download.opensuse.org/update/openSUSE-non-oss-current/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-current/repo/non-oss/ http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/openSUSE-current/repo/oss/ There is really not much you could do wrong. Don´t forget to disable or delete the old openSUSE 12.3 repos.
