[opensuse-factory] 10.2 install fails on boards that use JMicron PATA controller
What appears to me to be the same problem has been reported a number of times: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=215904 Opened on October 27, status "Resolved" on November 28. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=216165 Opened on October 29, status "Resolved" November 23. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=217930 Opened on Nov 3, status "Resolved" November 24. Considered a duplicate of the second bug. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=218863 Opened November 7, status "Needinfo" November 28. Motherboard: ASUS M2V - uses JMicron JMB360 as PATA controller https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=227505 Opened December 10, status "New" Olaf Amm wrote:
I have an ASUS P5B with JMicron controller. When installing OpenSuSE 10.2, it tries however to load AHCI drivers for PATA, and consequently, neither the CD drive with the installation source nor any PATA hard drives are found.
If I load *manually* pata_jmicron, it works. However, at least for beginners this is definetly a showstopper. Should load pata_jmicron automatically during installation if such a controller is present.
I also have an ASUS P5B Deluxe and reported the same problem work-around here on 23 November (at the time I was unaware of the prior history of this bug). If the JMicron is set to "IDE" in the P5B BIOS, the pata_jmicron driver is not loaded and the install halts with "Make sure that CD1 is in your drive." Backing up in the text install and manually loading pata_jmicron allows the install to proceed. However, if the JMicron is set to "AHCI" in the P5B BIOS, the same procedure (manually loading pata_jmicron) results in the install message: "Insert nil CD1" during the "initializing catalogs" stage. I have not found a work-around to get past this point. After aborting, looking at the installed drivers shows pata_jmicron is still installed. Why does the install program suddenly fail to see that CD1 is in the drive? Installing from the same CDs using a SCSI optical disk succeeds, and the PATA optical drive is accessible with the P5B BIOS set to "AHCI" for the JMicron. I sent email to the assignee (Steffen Winterfeldt) for the "new" bug, but have not received a response. Suggestions on how to proceed to finally get this old problem fixed are welcomed. -rex --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
