[opensuse-factory] Tumbleweed Live KDE and EFI Secure Boot
My daughter has asked me to install Linux on her new Lenovo laptop. Before doing so, I thought I would try a Live Tumbleweed version to see what might be a problem. The laptop has Windows 8, EFI and Secure Boot enabled. My questions (for the Live test) are: * Can it boot the Live ISO from a USB stick on an EFI system? * Do I need to disable Secure Boot in the PC setup first? * If I re-enable Secure Boot, will Windows 8 have an issue? * If I later decide to install from a proper image, would I need to disable Secure Boot? * On other laptops, I have had great luck shrinking the Windows partition, installing openSUSE, and getting a nice dual boot. Should I be equally optimistic here? Thanks for any answers or pointers! -- Roger Oberholtzer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Go for Leap! Having bleading edge SUSE on your daughters laptop is asking for a *lot* of (value)time being spent on her laptop. *YOU* might be expecting fallout or trouble, but your daughter won't. I speak from experience. My daughter is very happy with Leap.

+1 I've helped several people with this choice - Tumbleweed or Leap. In every case, the person has made the choice to go with Leap. With Tumbleweed, I was bit by the systemd/pam issue (which was resolved quickly, thanks all!). These users could/would not have dealt with it. The Leap installations have been flawless ... except for one person who had a problem with "my Linux". It actually turned out to be a Windows-in-VM issue that was resolved with a known-good snapshot (which they figured out). If your daughter doesn't need the benefits of Tumbleweed, I strongly recommend Leap.

Yes, it can.
* Do I need to disable Secure Boot in the PC setup first?
This should not be necessary. It should boot with secure-boot enabled. But a proviso -- I do not have a new lenovo to test that. I am able to boot opensuse uses with secure-boot enabled on my Dell desktop and on my Lenovo ThinkServer (purchased 2014, as I recall).
* If I re-enable Secure Boot, will Windows 8 have an issue?
That should not be a problem. Windows 8 is okay with secure-boot on or off. However, this puzzles me. A "new" lenovo laptop should come with Windows 10, or at least with Windows 8.1. So this laptop might not be so new. My Lenovo ThinkServer would not boot opensuse with secure-boot enabled, when I first tried. It does now, after a firmware (BIOS) update. Before the BIOS update, I had to disable secure-boot to install. Then I had to modify "shim.efi" (remove the opensuse signature) before I could use secure-boot. That's because the older lenovo BIOS could not cope with an efi application that had two signature. I go into this much detail, because it is possible you will run into that problem.
* If I later decide to install from a proper image, would I need to disable Secure Boot?
EFI booting for the DVD installer is similar to that for the live image. Unless you have the problem of an older BIOS that I hinted at above, it should just work. Otherwise, you might need to turn off secure-boot to install, and then modify "shim.efi" (details on the opensuse wiki UEFI page) before you turn secure-boot back on. Or update the BIOS.
* On other laptops, I have had great luck shrinking the Windows partition, installing openSUSE, and getting a nice dual boot. Should I be equally optimistic here?
Yes, this should be fine. I don't have Windows on my Lenovo. However, a number of posts at opensuse forums suggest that all works well with lenovo UEFI laptops. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I tried booting Live Tumbleweed, and the system kept booting Windows. Even though I had the USB device at the top of the boot list in the boot menu of the PC. I am making a new USB image. It was suggested that I use Leap instead. But IIRC, there is no Live image for Leap that I can use to see how things might work.

It is 8.1. We did not want 10.0. In fact, the constant whining Windows is doing to update to 10 is a motivating factor for installing Linux. When my daughter was younger and used our home PC, she used Linux. GIMP and LibreOffice are tools she is familiar with.

Try hitting F12 during boot (while the logo is still showing). That should give a BIOS boot menu, and hopefully that includes booting the live USB.

I'll take a look. But she is at University studying to be a civil engineer in fire safety. Maybe she is a bit too old for that? What she would probably be more interested in is software related to what she is studying. -- Roger Oberholtzer -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Check whether Windows actually shuts down. Some machines don't shut down, but rather hibernate. That would explain your issues IIRC. -- Gertjan Lettink, a.k.a. It seems changing the boot order in the BIOS did nothing. F12 did the trick.
After agreeing to accept the certificate in the openSUSE boot, all
went fine. All hardware was detected. Graphics looked good. Even the
two-finger scroll on the touchpad worked.
I think I will install Leap. And shrink the Windows partition. JIC.
