[opensuse-factory] MultiKey/Compose strangeness after last TW update
Hi list, two days ago I did upgrade my home Tumbleweed machine from 20191216 to 20200325. Since this upgrade, I have issues with the compose key setup. I have right Alt defined as MultiKey in .Xmodmap: keysym Alt_R = Multi_key An so far could (in any text field) use, e.g., Alt - " - a to get an umlaut-a. (compose definitions are in .XCompose) After the upgrade, in Emacs the MultiKey is just completely ignored and I get "a instead. If I put focus on an XTerm, when pressing the right Alt key, a weird Icon pops up somewhere on the screen (seems to be some last-remembered location, so it's not neccessarily in the same window where focus is). See attached gif (this is 4kB, so I guess that's OK). The Compose then does work there, but of course the main place where I need it is in the editor :( I tried to figure out what is catching the input and/or where this behavior is defined (shortcuts etc), but without success. So any hints where to look are highly appreciated....

That "weird icon" is actually the ibus input box with glyph U+2384 (which your font does not have a glyph for - hence the substitute synthesized glyph with digits 2,3,8,4 in it). For trivial Latin compositions, the input box need not be larger than necessary; only for complex systems like mozc and pinyin it's larger: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0f/Ibus-pinyin.png This started between ibus 1.5.17 and 1.5.19 (Leap 15.0->15.1), it is not "new" for Tumbleweed at all. The environment variables ought to be set in the system for ibus and/or compositions to work in different subenvironments: $ env QT4_IM_MODULE=ibus QT_IM_MODULE=ibus XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus (Xlib/xterm) INPUT_METHOD=ibus (?) Ah, that explains things! Highly appreciated. So it wasn't the standard system upgrade, but instead Zoom (which I needed to install at the same time for home office) that pulled in ibus as I noticed. Still not very intuitive that the box pops up just somewhere on the screen.. Good thing. Those who know history aren't doomed to repeat the same errors all over again. Oh, but wait ;^> I'll definitely put the solution im my history notes, and hope I'll remember, should it show up again. For now I've also taken the route to uninstall ibus.
