[opensuse-factory] openSUSE Branding HOWTO (gfxboot and bootsplash)
Hi list-mates, I've been integrating the artwork for 11.4 and I thought that it would be a good idea to write an openSUSE Branding HOWTO (gfxboot and bootsplash- branding-openSUSE). Feedback is welcome! Will's KDE Branding HOWTO is here: http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kde/2010-06/msg00068.html If you have also done some branding, think about writing a HOWTO ;-) gfxboot Update the following images: back.jpg in themes/openSUSE/data-boot/ Startup options. 800x600 welcome.jpg in themes/openSUSE/data-install/ back.jpg in themes/openSUSE/data-install/ Install options. 800x600 You can get the svg of the CD shown in welcome.jpg at http://gitorious.org/opensuse/art/trees/master/cdboot bootsplash-branding-openSUSE Update the following files: All the silent-* and bootsplash-* images in themes/openSUSE/images/ silent-* is the non-verbose bootsplash bootsplash-* is the verbose bootsplash Take into account that bootsplash-* is the background image for the console (text should be readable). The sampling factor of both silent-* and bootsplash-* must be 2x2,1x1,1x1 (aka 411). You can convert them all at once running for file in *.jpg; do convert $file -sampling-factor 2x2,1x1,1x1 $file; done (requires ImageMagick) The current resolutions for both silent and bootsplash images are the following: 640x480 800x600 1024x600 1024x768 1152x768 1152x864 1280x768 1280x800 1280x854 1280x960 1280x1024 1366x768 1400x1050 1440x900 1600x1024 1600x1200 1680x1050 1920x1200 3200x1200 logo.mng is the logo for non-verbose bootsplash logov.mng is the logo for verbose bootsplash The configuration files are under themes/openSUSE/config/ There's no need to touch them unless you want to play with the mngs and the progress bar. Don't forget to take a look at the Gitorious openSUSE Art repository (gitorious.org/opensuse/art), especially http://gitorious.org/opensuse/art/blobs/master/boot/bootsplash.php Greetings, -- Javier Llorente

It's great to see an HOWTO! :) Could we have those HOWTOs up somewhere on a wiki or so to find them for quick reference and be able to adapt them when something changes or is made more precise? Any chance we could get 1920x1080 in resolutions? Quite a few monitors come with this nowadays. //Bjørn -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

yes, mine :-) and in fact we need two kind of brandings: * openSUSE distro independant branding for teams, and the various XX.opensuse.org * brandings for each new distro thanks jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://pizzanetti.fr -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

There is already *-branding-upstream. You mean one branding per language? Greetings, -- Javier Llorente

Well, there is already some wiki page about it. It would be better to update them or merged them somehow: http://en.opensuse.org/Gfxboot for gfxboot and http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:KIWI_Cookbook_Splash_Screen One hint regarding branding packages : do NOT use fdupes on a gfxboot branding package, otherwise you have high changes to have a broken gfxboot for generating a install image ;) -- Frederic Crozat <fcrozat@novell.com> Novell -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I have added some bits to that page (SDB:KIWI_Cookbook_Splash_Screen). I didn't know it existed. Thanks for telling! -- Javier Llorente

If you have also done some branding, think about writing a HOWTO ;-)
I can write some stuff about GNOME branding, but I guess I'd need to know what people usually want to change ;-) What is important: - gconf2-branding-openSUSE: this is where most of our branding goes right now. The spec file creates a gconf xml file that sets: default wallpaper (we use the one from desktop-data-openSUSE), default theme, various other settings we want, etc. - gimp-branding-openSUSE: to change the default splash on startup. - gtk2-branding-openSUSE and gtk3-branding-openSUSE: to change the fallback theme, in case default theme can't be found - hicolor-icon-theme-branding-openSUSE: to define the logo of the distribution, when used in a theme. It's used in the gdm login screen, for example. What might be of interest: - epiphany-branding-openSUSE: to change the vendor in the user agent, as well as default bookmarks - gdm-branding-openSUSE: to change some default settings in gdm - glib2-branding-openSUSE: to change the default applications - gnome-menus-branding-openSUSE: to change the applications menu structure - PackageKit-branding-openSUSE: to change the vendor, and define some default configuration - pidgin-branding-openSUSE: to change some default settings in pidgin Things I've never touched (so don't trust me on this ;-)): - compiz-branding-openSUSE: contains the openSUSE logo (for use with, say, the compiz cube) But as a rule of thumb, for people doing some branding: look at the source packages for all *-branding-openSUSE packages that are installed on your system. AFAIK, not yet. What do we have to update? gimp-branding-openSUSE libreoffice-branding-openSUSE (I like its default splash, btw) Thanks, -- Javier Llorente
