20241119 kvm/qemu sound issues
After updating to 20241119 kvm/qemu vm's don't have sound ( it worked fine before the update ). The login sound is not heard and if try to play an mp3 using vlc in the vm you cannot hear it. Volume is at max level you just cannot hear any sound. You can also see the sound playing in the Audio Volume control If you RDP into the vm ( also running same version of TW ) and login as the same user, then sound works fine so it appears that something with the redirection of sound in kvm/qemu back to the host is not working whereas xrdp uses a different method which is why it works. Also, no sound in a kvm/qemu vm that is running Win10. Anybody else seeing this issue ? -- Regards, Joe

Also, just tested RDP from a Win10 laptop into the Win10 kvm/qemu vm and sound works via RDP there too. So definitely appears to be a kvm/qemu issue with redirecting sound back to the host and since RDP sound redirection works that confirms that the guest isn't having and sound or sound configuration issues. -- Regards, Joe

It's a bug which is being worked on. You can downgrade qemu/kvm to the previous version and that fixes it. Or you can wait for another upgrade. This discussion is about Arch, but it affects all distros using qemu/kvm https://gitlab.com/qemu-project/qemu/-/issues/2639
The problem occurs when using the SPICE audio backend. As a workaround, I changed the backend to pipewire.
This is a known bug in qemu 9.1.1, see also here: https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1232728 https://gitlab.com/qemu-project/qemu/-/issues/2639 You can either go back to 9.1.0 or wait for 9.1.2, which will revert the patch from 9.1.1, that fixed a memory leak, but killed sound when using spice.
