[opensuse-factory] No os on disk after fresh install of 12.3B1 trough USB
Hi, After a failure upgrading my experimental disk from 12.2 to 12.3 (see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=799296 I downloaded the DVD-iso (openSUSE-DVD-Build0348-x86_64.iso), applied isohybrid to it and installed from the then created USB stick. Installation goes without any warning or error, but after it's finished the system won't boot up from the disk: No operating system. Something I have done wrong, or something in the install process that faulty? regards, Jogchum -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Hi,
After a failure upgrading my experimental disk from 12.2 to 12.3 (see
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=799296
I downloaded the DVD-iso (openSUSE-DVD-Build0348-x86_64.iso), applied isohybrid to it and installed from the then created USB stick. Installation goes without any warning or error, but after it's finished the system won't boot up from the disk: No operating system.
Boot in rescue mode and post "fdisk -l" output.
Something I have done wrong, or something in the install process that faulty?
regards, Jogchum

is your BIOS set to BOOT from your disk sdf ? The bios is likely looking for a boot loader on the first disk.. unlikely to be sdf. It might be possible to change your bios to look at another disk (your sdf2 is 'bootable' after all). When you installed from USB stick which partitioning method did you use, 1) allow installer to choose, 2) advanced - edit partition table? If you use the edit partition table method you can select where to create /boot and what size it will be. Same for all the other partitions. Also, did you try burning the iso directly to the stick using dd? Tom -- A positive attitude may not solve all your problems, but it will annoy enough people to make it worth the effort. I did the advanced method, importing the setup from the fstab of the disk the installation would go to. I used dd to create the USB-stick. Jogchum -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Well ... you have at least 5 HDDs (assuming you booted from USB stick to get this output) so the first thing you need to know - from which disk you actually boot. That's something installer cannot know. I suggest you download bootinfoscript (http://sourceforge.net/p/bootinfoscript/code/ci/e7fc7064677c9cdc7bff12c315bb...) and paste output somewhere, e.g. susepaste.org. And explain how your HDDs are setup in BIOS, which boot priority, which one is boot disk. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
I'm a bit late to the conversation here, but... I gave 12.3 Beta1 a
try last night with a clean install on a real machine (instead of the
usual VBox route)

First question: Why did you apply isohybrid to the DVD-iso? That should not be necessary. The steps for creating a bootable USB stick are: 1. Download the DVD-iso 2. Find your USB stick and plug it in 3. Launch SuSE ImageWriter 4. Drag/drop the iso to the ImageWriter window and wait a couple minutes. If you use unetbootin, the steps shouldn't be much different. The "need" for isohybrid has gone away several releases ago. I don't think you even need it if you go the dd route - although you may need to set a boot flag on the USB stick. Aha, maybe this is why.... http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Live_USB_stick#Bootable_USB_from_DVD_or_Net-insta... explains that this is necessary. I assume that is quite out of date? I haven't had to use isohybrid in a long time for the DVD iso.

I got this as well. I booted the USB, installed 12.3B1 (clean install, formatting /dev/sda), and on initial reboot, the computer complained about there being no operating system. I unplugged the USB stick, and reset the computer and everything booted up properly, and the second stage of the install loaded and completed correctly. My drive setup is 4 HDDs, /dev/sda is my Linux drive, /dev/sdb is my Windows drive, and /dave/sdc and sdd are large sotrage drives (no OS installed to either). Grub is installed to /dev/sda (default setting). So far, after that initial glitch with the first boot after install, the system is working pretty good for a Beta1 release (minor issues, but not on topic with this thread).
