Asking for a help with what has changed in Leap 15.5
subject: Asking for help with what has changed in Leap 15.5 Hello openSUSE! we'd like to ask every single one of you for help with reviewing and updating what has changed in openSUSE Leap 15.5. We have the following page which tracks relatively detailed changes in individual subsystems. https://en.opensuse.org/Features_15.5 If you could find 5 minutes of your time, and review relevant sections for your packages that would be super helpful! We're mostly looking for interesting highlights. If you don't find time before the release, please consider making changes after June 7. This page is often used by magazines who are looking for more details than we share in our release announcement. Thank you The openSUSE Release team

I am not qualified to fix any of them, but that page has 21 references to the features in Leap 15.4, not 15.5. Larry

Nothing to add from my end! Thanks Axel
Looking into the Python section, as far as I know Leap 15.5 will have python311, python311-pip and python311-setuptools packages. The page talks about Python 3.9 and Python 3.10, but doesn't say anything about the new Python 3.11. On jue, 2023-06-01 at 19:19 +0000, Lubos Kocman via openSUSE Factory wrote:

The Mesa section is outdated. We now have version 22.3.5. Is it of interest to list hardware that has been enabled for 15.5? We have a bunch of GPUs that are not supported in the 5.14 kernel but has been enabled specifically by us. -Patrik

Yes, please. Hardware support('enablement') is one of the major 'selling points' for distribution release. When new release of Leap drops, most common questions, in my experience, in openSUSE support channels, are "kernel version is too old and I've heard I need something newer so $shiny_new_toy would work?" and "can I stop using out-of-tree kernel module for (mostly wireless, mostly Broadcom) chipset yet?" IIRC, someone asked in #opensuse recently if their Intel hybrid CPU( Raptor Lake-P?) will be (better)supported with 15.5. Spoiler: it works just fine, apparently, as reported by the user after the upgrade, but suggesting them to try and see rather then being able to check and maybe make an educated guess about that is...not ideal :) So, bottom line: detailed as you can make it (with emphasis on wired/wireless networking and CPU/GPU support) changelog is not just for the weirdos like me that are curious about that sort of thing, it's also a marketing tool, sort- of :) Pedja

Somewhat related to that, there is a tool for uploading hardware details to <http://linux-hardware.org>, using hw-probe, but it is broken, and no response on the bugzilla. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.4 x86_64 at Telcontar)

Daniel Noga added some bits about the GPU enablement. Looks good IMO.

Right, I also enabled some Intel iGPUs. Perhaps those should be mentioned as well. I'll have a look.

I completely agree!

Hello, new to the list. :) I noticed there are still a couple references to 15.4 that I assume should be 15.5.

I am not a mantainer of any package, but I want to help, so I tried to improve feature notes for KDE section, Mesa section and kernel section. For KDE and Mesa section I was able to easily find packages in repository and info on the internet. For kernel I mostly improved wording to better describe, that kernel is not as old as it looks. I tried to guess there, how new GPU drivers are just from package logs, correct me there, if I am wrong.

Here are some thoughts: The GPUs that we specifically enabled for 15.5 and that people would be most interested in are: AMD Radeon RX 7600, AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT/XTX, Intel ARC A380, Intel ARC A750, Intel Arc A770. The DRM subsystem (subsystem for GPUs) only got updated to v6.0 (not v6.2). Some drivers got additional version bumps but perhaps that is too much detail to provide in this document? Thanks Patrik
