[opensuse-factory] [Tumbleweed] konsole KDE4 vs. KF5
After an update yesterday I'm unexpectedly back to the KDE4 konsole application. Looking at the list of installed packages I see that the update pulled in konsole4-part: S | Name | Type | Version | Arch | Repository --+---------------+-------------+-------------+--------+--------------- i | konsole | package | 15.04.1-1.1 | x86_64 | Tumbleweed-OSS i | konsole-part | package | 15.04.1-1.1 | x86_64 | Tumbleweed-OSS i | konsole4-part | package | 4.14.3-1.1 | x86_64 | Tumbleweed-OSS i | Konsole | application | | noarch | Tumbleweed-OSS There were no conflicts and the installation verifies OK, but it seems that konsole-part and konsole4-part shouldn't be able to be installed at the same time? Konsole identifies itself as 2.14.2 zsing KDE 4.14.8. yes they should! Luckily the only things I'm still using from KDE is konsole and yakuake (OK, and sometimes okular). yakuake needs konsole4-part. konsole needss konsole-part. Having both installed poses no obvious problem on my machine. -- Stefan Seyfried "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled." -- Richard Feynman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Correct. That is also the reason why the different package names. At the current moment we still have some KDE4 based applications that require the konsole-part files in order to provide full functionality. As that these applications can not use the KF5 based konsole-part, we created the konsole4- part which is based on the latest KDE4 konsole version (which is 4.14.3). The files for the KDE4 version is installed in different locations and therefore there are no conflicts. Not all users however would have both installed. If you do not use any KDE4 based application, then it could be that konsole4-part is not installed. So you are saying that I should be able to use both the KDE4 and KF5 version of konsole on my system? The session manager somehow decided to switch from KF5 to KDE4 and I don't see how to run the KF5 based konsole at the moment. No, you may have installed applications which depend on either the KDE4 konsole-part *or* the KF5 konsole-part. The konsole application in its latest incarnation depends on the KF5 konsole-part. IIRC kdevelop uses the KDE4 konsole-part. The old konsole was installed as /usr/bin/konsole and the new one is installed as /usr/bin/konsole, so the packages conflict. The dependencies can be co- installed, the application itself can not. That's what I was wondering about all along. I haven't seen that file conflict message, but I had to do part of the update via apper and that may have hidden it. No, that is not what I am saying. Konsole itself is only available as KF5 based application. The KDE4 based konsole is no longer being provided, so I am not sure what you mean that the session manager decided to switch from KF5 to KDE4. The only thing that I indicated is that certain programs that are still KDE4 based are requiring certains "parts" from konsole. These specific "parts" are being provided by the new package konsole4-part which is build from the konsole 4.14.3 tarball). As you indicated we also have a konsole-part package that is covering those programs that are already Frameworks based. Yes, and this is presumably what I have in /usr/bin/konsole: $ rpm -qf /usr/bin/konsole konsole-15.04.1-1.1.x86_64 Zypper later pulled in the konsole4-part package and that's when I got the KDE4 konsole back.

I mean that when I run the above executable I get a KDE4 konsole window (at first I thought session manager had switched back to the KDE4 konsole, but that doesn't seem the case).

Well then there's maybe something else going on, I don't know. I am still not running on Plasma 5.3, so maybe that fact makes it prefer (or preload?) the KDE4 konsole part.
