[opensuse-factory] Expiration of the final US patents covering MP3 and inclusion of libmad in Leap 42.3
Earlier today, I recalled that the final US patents covering the MP3 were due to expire this year, and I did a quick Google search, and found this list at OSNews (Scroll down to get the table): http://www.osnews.com/story/24954/US_Patent_Expiration_for_MP3_MPEG-2_H_264/ It also links to other lists that point to the same date, the 16th of April 2017, for the final US patent related to the MP3 format to expire. I would think that this could allow for Leap 42.3 to legally include libmad, and thereby enable full MP3 support across the distribution without any non-free code (Like Fluendo GStreamer plugins etc.). I must confess I rarely hang out on the mailing lists, but I just thought I would put this idea out there, since we are a good few months away from the release of 42.3, and if I happened to be correct it could be very useful to FINALLY have libmad included in the distribution's own package set. This is especially true since VLC itself is actually included. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Most of mp3 related packages are already on way to Factory and can be included in next Leap (once they are accepted to Factory) - in other words mentioned patent expiration is of course known to maintainers of relevant packages :) Cheers Martin -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- iQIzBAEBCAAdFiEEwQnJ+Ps8HqIKhK3yWyRdZ/3eaFcFAljmGMoACgkQWyRdZ/3e aFeowQ//caz8cj8q4Q5mQly1mGWrFxxkl+DM21YDxprXwLJyW4R4gN9YA9f6nf12 bcvoWIbuFjZrT2nmDKKr2rhF0b5DnBrQ3I9SqPTRa5Q5F26u7rYZkwCWvHc7NDek tPRNvVBREoFvzdfhS5J2++GhVo3QT6kuk8AtcUiG3G3aypKGSze96N8bNFHE169h FR2yRfJujmrytppEHvEvcargfm2B9U7mMrRHDT4urkWqdg1XuD221yV/evo0Y8bB 1AEAEwNyzUYHfKFoSmSNbypoSaSTV57LZw9SPQ5PiPmvotYV2v56uYKDfBzep1RD C5AGHz+JFP1UeC0aXkfs7Hl8wDlVd0JrDPvxTzM0d46W4CHcH3FuvM6Sekqqnp21 6zqgZQ9P5UrERIna3wizroSga0OUqw52ovG5DVw1IaKReekrA2YKuPDnSVtXIuxV TrnYoJxrJu8dzckuOzrjhjEwQ2AZmvcKAUTX/8+Wn/DQAWo/SMRPrxkbCIQQYxXB 406zr2+iFk5sC2cGZ9XiDG0WbQtr+aPR9hRjYx+ZaGz9cVUSlIkWQne6B0RoDK1c ofVny8gemRM66OTcsDkfId65aRDCf+ybWkF5WSC2yGzUrmL2adzLWtKgy/4hUPTv ctcPm7rvVjQI37xsXSucxKzDtskeokeJ6h4ZszML8RIxj7FA8D4= =V1r6 -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org
