[opensuse-factory] Again: Default bittorrent client
Hello all, I think the decision to make Monsoon the default bittorrent client for 11.0 might have been a little rushed. True, it looks nice; true, its developer is very forthcoming. But it seems far from really usable: - It hogs memory like nobody's business: ATM I'm downloading the openSUSE beta 2 DVD with it and it uses 54,3 MBs RAM and 414.8(!) MBs of SWAP; CPU usage averages around 25%. This is far, far above what Transmission uses! - Once running, it won't accept torrent-files via Firefox. You have to download the torrent-file and add it to the queue manually! IMHO those two are showstoppers for Monsoon in 11.0. After they've been fixed, I wouldn't mind using Monsoon, but can this be done reliably until the release date for 11.0 final? Please let's simply get back to the working solution, i.e. Transmission and wait till Monsoon has matured. Until then, you can download the Beta2 DVDs "directly" from ftp5.gwdg.de. Viele Grüße Eberhard Mönkeberg (emoenke@gwdg.de, em@kki.org)

Several people tested it and this issue did not come up.

Please file a bugreport against GNOME.

It wont be fixed unless it's known so please file it in bugzilla so that it can be looked at.

AFAIK, there was no previous solution. We didn't have a default bittorrent client before.

Will do. I just saw the uneasy feeling confirmed tonight that I got when I witnessed how easily the young project Monsoon was adapted as the default BT client against tried-and-tested Transmission. Is the decision carved in stone, or can it be changed, yet? I must say, Monsoon has aspects that I like much better than Transmission: Its looks, the detailed information; speed is very good, too. But still, perhaps the decision about the default should be reconsidered. A BT client should mainly to its work unobtrusively in the background and not become prominent by memory-usage. (Well, unless you prefer Azureus, anyway...) As I said, it was tested by several people before the decision was made. I don't know if you're still subscribed to the -gnome ml but that's where the discussion took place. JP asked if anyone was willing to test and suggest a default client and Monsoon was the result of that. I think we also added tranmission to Factory as a backup but not sure. If you're not happy with the decision, it'd probably be best to send an email to -gnome for that discussion. Yes we did. So it'd be easy to switch to transmission by default if we want. Andy did: http://en.opensuse.org/User:FunkyPenguin/TorrentReview and there was some consensus, especially because Alan was going to be around. Its probably best to let those two comment and Andy to re-assess where we stand. -JP -- JP Rosevear <jpr@novell.com> Novell, Inc. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I'll have to try that. I'm downloading 11b2 as I write using KTorrent. Why would the developers switch from KTorrent. IMO, it is the best torrent client - irrelevant of platform - I've ever seen. It contains the most features and does the job handily. Monotorrent appears to only be at a .3 release. -- kai www.filesite.org || www.4thedadz.com || www.perfectreign.com remember - a turn signal is a statement, not a request --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Perhaps because _K_torrent is a KDE app, and this is about the default _Gnome_ bittorrent client? >:-) - -- Cheers, Carlos E.
