[opensuse-factory] Any remaining users of i4l-base? Or should it be dropped?

Hi all, even though Olaf has heroically fixed i4l-base to build again in Factory (https://build.opensuse.org/request/show/741743), I doubt it will work, because not only the now missing header files have been removed from the linux kernel, but also all the accompanying infrastructure... This happened with commit 9c3c0c2048149d946d7f3ebdcbe70e2946750bfb Author: Arnd Bergmann <arnd@arndb.de> Date: Thu Apr 18 22:43:36 2019 +0200 isdn: remove isdn4linux which ended up in Linux-5.3. So should we keep it building or just drop it? Does it serve any purpose without the accompanying kernel functionality? The dependent packages are not so much: ~> osc -A suse whatdependson openSUSE:Factory i4l-base standard x86_64 i4l-base : capi4hylafax wine wine-nine-standalone wine:staging abd I'd guess that WINE can be just configured to exclude ISDN functionality. Any opinions? Confirmed :-) oS ships hylafax+ without ISDN stuff Cheers Axel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Ditto. But no capi, just with an iax2 interface. -- Per Jessen, Zürich (15.8°C) http://www.dns24.ch/ - your free DNS host, made in Switzerland. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Sorry for chiming in late. Was away for a few days. Let me take the chance to say "Thank you, Axel" for you continued support of the hylafax+ package. It is *much* *appreciated*, and yes, there are a couple of users out there, given that T.30 works quite well with iaxmodem, even on VoIP trunks. While at it, did you guys solved asterisk/hylafax T.38 integration successfully? There is no kernel driver corresponding to the i4l-base stuff anymore. I have no idea if / how hylafax can work without a kernel driver. The i4l-base stuff most likely can't. Maybe hylafax can be built without ISDN support. -- Stefan Seyfried "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled." -- Richard Feynman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

As I wrote in my earlier mail, hylafax+ comes without ISDN. Prerequisite for this is that it builds as well w/o ISDN ;-) Cheers Axel -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Well it's accepted meanwhile, and builds for all targets. Fun. IIRC, the remaining (m)ISDN stack in the kernel/userspace is targeted on routers, that want to provide an internal ISDN S0 interface in order to keep local ISDN equipment working. Unfortunately, there's no much documentation out there, that describes, which hardware is (still) supported, and how it is set up. So, I've no idea, what i4l-base will provide, given the last ISDN landlines are taken off forcefully everywhere now. Hi, for info: the isdn4linux@listserv.isdn4linux.de list is still (a little) active. (about 60 mails in 2019) so maybe before dropping, i would suggest to announce / ask there also. Am 28.10.19 um 11:26 schrieb Hans-Peter Jansen:

Read the other emails, isdn4linux support was removed from the kernel, it won't work anymore. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I never doubted that it builds. But it is probably totally useless. The build fix was "pack the removed kernel headers into the package to make it build". But it is not only the kernel headers that are gone, the whole kernel infrastructure described by these headers is gone. So we now have a package that will build happily ever after, but not work.
