[opensuse-factory] Yast-gtk package selector status
I have just seen some screenshots of the "new and improved" package selector. If I see some slight improvements, it's still far from what it should have been according to the original idea presented here: http://blog.sukimashita.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/12/martin-package-select... This nice, good looking and feature rich proposal became the following in alpha1: http://www.decriptor.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/packageselector1.png http://www.decriptor.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/packageselector2.png http://www.decriptor.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/01/packageselector3.png It definitely looks bad, and it doesn't seem to add all the functionalities YaST Software Management has in its Qt version. We discussed a lot about having a very similar interface on both desktop managers for YaST. This is not going in that direction, in my opinion, so it would be nice to have some clarification on the plans for openSUSE 11. P.S. Sorry for posting on two ML's, but the topic fits both. Judging from http://en.opensuse.org/Special:Log It would appear that the Martin Schmidkunz from the usability team has been looking at package management UI design. (http://en.opensuse.org/Image:Redesign_swmanagement_search.png for example) I hope the outcome of this design work can be adopted for both the GTK and the Qt package selectors. I don't know how overly optimistic this is, I suppose it depends on GNOME team agreeing with everyone else. As you mention, it is very useful to have the same design UI for package management on both desktops so that we can write desktop agnostic documentation, and help people from either desktop. Currently both the GTK and Qt selector designs have significant problems IMO http://bw.uwcs.co.uk/b/qt_selector_problems.png are some of the things that annoy me most about the Qt one. Some of which are solved in the new (factory) GTK selector, but there are also new problems introduced in the new GTK selector. -- Benjamin Weber --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
It would firstly be great if the bug I reported for Yast GTK in OpenSuSE 10.3 was fixed and distributed across online update. This is a crytical bug for people using Orca and Gnome accessibility. I agree with Benji. About the bug fix, my past experience is telling me that it's more probable to have 11 before a patch for 10.3 is out. Of course, you can always try to poke developers, but it rarely works. Just a note that the http://en.opensuse.org/Usability/Softwaremanagement page has the full proposal. Yes, but beta 1 is not that far. And we are risking again to have issues on the package management side because of lack of testing. Anyway, here's a list of what I don't think it's working in the current (alpha1) implementation of YaST GTK software management module (posted also on -gnome to answer to J. Ogley there): * Mainly lacking features in the gtk edition I can think to: * No versions shown in the list (you've to click on all single packages). This was solved in the first proposal. * No highlighting of newest/oldest packages (in the qt version: blue -> a new package is available, red -> the installed package is newer than what's in repositories). This was solved in the first proposal, using icons. * Highest number of clicks to do one task: 1 click to select/lock/update a package in Qt, 2 clicks in the gtk version. * It's quite different from the Qt interface, so it makes hard to support people for example on IRC, or to write general tutorials/documentation.
