[opensuse-factory] OS_12-2-RC1 DVD iso doesn't boot
I downloaded openSuSE 12.2-RC1 (Build0050 x86-64) and verified the sha256 checksum. I have burned three (3) DVDs by different methods but none of them would boot, instead going right to existing grub menu. The methods I used were k3b, brasero, and dd. K3b and brasero both burned the DVD with no errors and verified them. DD returned a message about the DVD ran out of room so couldn’t complete. The procedures I used in k3b and brasero are the same ones I've used in the past (scripted-I only have to enter the file path). Is anyone else having this problem? Just installed RC1 and it works perfect. You probably have to change the boot order in your BIOS to try first to boot from your CD/DVD device before going to your hard disk. -- fr.gr. No, the boot order in BIOS is correct: removable media (usb), CD/DVD, hard disk. I also did a dd to a usb stick and that was successful using the same iso image. I'm wondering if I might have a problem with the drive or defective DVD media (Maxwell DVD-R). The message when doing the dd to the DVD (not enough space) makes me think the size is being reported incorrectly. Tom -- “What we do for ourselves dies with us. Try burning it to a dual-layer DVD. I burned the iso file to a rewritable DVD using k3b with a check step after the burning step. I had to repeat the burning, because the check showed an error. The second time the check was OK. So it should work using k3b. -- fr.gr. Freek de Kruijf -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Always use k3b - it's the most reliable burner I know. I've been using it for many, many years. Has never failed me (except during one occasion, for a very brief period, some years ago - explanation provided on request :-) ). Unless you use a most reliable brand of CD or DVD - for example Verbatim, but only if manufactured in Singapore or Japan or Taiwan - then burn at the slowest speed you can manage. That's no small possibility. Check to see who manufactured yours and you'll likely find they are in group 2 here: http://www.digitalfaq.com/reviews/dvd-media.htm For my own DVD-R use, I only buy Taiyo Yuden any more, several hundred a year. Locally they are not available, and the Verbatim available locally hasn't been the good stuff. For a while JVC was available locally, and it was great while it lasted. I wouldn't give up before trying K3B and burning at half or less speed than the rating of the media. For installing Linux, I rarely burn an iso. Instead I put the installation kernel and initrd where Grub can find them and install via HTTP or NFS. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
