You gotta be kiddin, right? Of course they are broken, in a sense. Don't you know that? For legal reasons, they are not distributed with all the features they are capable of. Every body knows that, except that we don't say 'broken' and give it some other name. It's the same. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. why is that "broken" ? amarok works fine (don't know about banshee), but not all possible features are enabled without external repositories. out of the box amarok plays free formats; isn't that enough in a OSS distribution? (and it's not hard to get it play restricted formats either; no changes to amarok are necessary, just the codecs that can't be distributed ander GNU.) -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I'm afraid your email doesn't bring anything useful to the topic, or to people interested in Factory in general. Please try to avoid such mails in the future so we can get the mailing list to have a better signal-to-noise ratio. if xmms was in openSUSE repos, it wouldn't play mp3 either. it's not because of the player, but because of legal considerations with mp3 codecs. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Ummmm I thought we didn't have that issue anymore since the gstreamer codecs from Fluendo are in there somewhere (not on the DVD, but.. pulled in from an update)... they cover off MP3 quite nicely. I've not noticed any issues... or is that not the point here? (the point being that an install off DVD with no updates has limitations) C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

this includes the packman repos. mp3 codecs are still available from the fluendo website, for free. before packman added xine codecs to the factory repos i used the fluendo stuff and it worked, sort of. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

certainly not my point, but the OP's, if i understood correctly. personally i prefer the codecs for xine though, since they have always been more stable for me. apparently he just wanted to vent his frustration over mp3 not playing out of the box; no question or anything useful in this thread. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I know. But you have to be aware of what people mean when they say that these tools are "broken". I personally don't use the term. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. me thinks better to (try to) educate them, rather than agreeing with them. 'broken' is wrong; 'limited' would be a better choice. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
