[opensuse-factory] 11.1 and ext4 filesystem
In 11.0 there is basic support ( kernelmodule and utilities) for ext4 but no support for installation on ext4. Will there be support for installation on ext4 in 11.1 ? Or is ext4 still considered too unstable ? --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Did you try to enter 'ext4' string manually into the partitioner? Maybe that works ... The filesystem selector in the yast2 disk is a listbox without the option to enter a string. The only option to get 11.0 on ext4 is to install on another filesystem and then copy it to the ext4 partition. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

We're doing a massive redesign of the partitioner for 11.1 and I'm not sure whether we can add ext4 support. The kernel and base tools will support it, so installing on ext3 and running tune2fs is one option, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Director Platform/openSUSE, aj@suse.de SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

What about adding some text to the new partitioner page briefly outlining how to do this? e.g. "Ext4: Not currently available in this partitioner tool - please select ext3 and, after installation, run tune2fs option option to convert." -- Cheers Richard. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

It's a wiki - go ahead ;)

AFAIR: tune2fs -E test_fs /dev/sd... and then change fstab to use ext4dev for the partition hope that's all, Andreas -- Andreas Jaeger, Director Platform/openSUSE, aj@suse.de SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Markus Rex, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nürnberg, Germany GPG fingerprint = 93A3 365E CE47 B889 DF7F FED1 389A 563C C272 A126

I can't find it on the OpenSuSE site - have you a link please?

At this point of time, I'm sorry to tell we can't :( Neither we will support ext4, nor, for example nfs4. ENOTIME ... However, we accept patches :)) Actually, we'd be quite happy if the community contributed.

There is a wiki page covering partitioning redesign here: http://en.opensuse.org/UX/Partitioner but that one covers almost exclusively user-interface aspect of the whole business and very technical information do not really fit there. However, a new page describing some partitioner tips and tricks could be added and we could, for example, link it from partitioner help text frozZzenB. -- \\\\\ Katarina Machalkova \\\\\\\__o YaST developer __\\\\\\\'/_ & hedgehog painter

I'm afraid this is more or less pointless ;-) Most people run the partitioner once - at installation. And at this time it isn't that easy to open a browser and read the wiki page ;-) (at least when installing from DVD, the live CDs obviously differ) If there are important things that users should know before doing the partitioning, please include them directly in the help text. Well, adding ext4 to YaST should not be so difficult unless it behaves significant different from ext2/ext3. Also ext4 is still not considered stable enough and other features are considered more important.
The kernel and base tools will support it, so installing on ext3 and running tune2fs is one option,
Seems as if parted still displays ext4 as ext3. At least blkid gets it right now. Can't do real test since I don't have a 11.1 Alpha at hand. ciao Arvin --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

We don't even support ext4 for 11.1 in the base tools. What we have now is basic support for ext4dev, this is basically ext4 with the test_filesystem flag set in the sb. This means it is intended for TESTING currently. As long as the kernel module is named ext4dev and *not* ext4 it does not make any sense to provide any enhanced user space support (like Yast). mkfs.ext4dev and fsck.ext4dev tools are now available in the e2fsprogs package.
