I couldn't think of a better place to ask. Where should it have gone? Absent packages that are part of other distros' base installations are not support issues, are they? -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Whatever else you get, get wisdom." All that pasted information was what I was able to glean from various sources before asking here. e.g. http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/12.3/repo/oss/sus... 18-Jun-2017 00:18 I downloaded that years ago, so it has a Jan 2013 timestamp matching its content...
fbset was not removed 3 years ago, but 6 years
...not yet 6. # ls -lGg fbs* -rw-rw-r-- 1 45141 Jan 7 2015 fbset-2.1-0.1.i586.rpm -rw-rw-r-- 1 46005 Jan 7 2015 fbset-2.1-0.1.x86_64.rpm I got those from BS home:Ledest. The content of those files matches the timestamps, not yet 4 years ago. They're what I use, and still work, but normally they are of no use, as the usual context is I'm asking someone who wants help on a forum or mailing list to provide information helpful in finding a solution.
The maintainer did so with a comment stating that it was made obsolete by KMS and other tools
Where would this comment have been, or be found now? If I could have figured out the replacement tool(s) I wouldn't still be looking or asking. Surely fbset must serve some purpose to justify other major distros continuing to include them not only in their repos, but in their default installations. Usually what I'm looking for is simply: mode columns rows inxi -Gxx, which apparently is not part of any openSUSE default installation, sometimes provides the answer, other times not. I've searched several times over the years without finding better. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Whatever else you get, get wisdom." Hi Michal, I re-read <and reread the mail again.. and yes, you are right! Apologies for that. Having the question in the midst of what seems to be the RPM changelog made it appear well hidden though:
# rpm -q --changelog fbset | head -n## * Thu Feb 16 2012 rschweikert@suse.com - place binaries in /usr tree (UsrMerge project)
* Fri Sep 30 2011 uli@suse.com - cross-build fix: use %__cc, %configure macros
Can it be brought back? Fedora and Debian still have it. From their changelogs:
* Fri Feb 23 2018 Florian Weimer <fweimer@...> - 2.1-45 - Use LDFLAGS from redhat-rpm-config (via %set_build_flags) - Remove "rm -rf ${RPM_BUILD_ROOT}" - Remove "%defattr(-,root,root)" - Add gcc build requirement
so, yes, there is first part of the rpm changelog, then a question and parts of a different changelog. My fault for not paying more attention in this case. Cheers, Dominique

AFAIK the are below /sys/class/graphics/fb0/ a file modes and a file mode former provides a list with possible modes and by using one of those lines e.g. echo U:1920x1200p-0 > /sys/class/graphics/fb0/mode it should be possible to set the mode. And so is fbset. It can define new modes.

I got those from BS home:Ledest.
This is the opensuse-factory@ mailinglist, related to the development of openSUSE distributions For all practical and legal purposes, the term "openSUSE distributions" does not, at all, in any way manner or form, include the contents of the home: repositories provided freely to any random person who logs in to reference build service server. If you wish to discuss the contents of a home: repository, I suggest you email the user who owns that home: repository. Their email address can often be found clearly in their OBS user profile. But I respectfully request that you avoid conflating those individuals with the Project as a whole in any future posts to this list. The developers of the openSUSE distributions who inhabit this list do not have any collective responsibility for the contents of any home: project. And my responses were therefore on topic, limited to information of relevance to this list, the actual contents of the openSUSE distributions. (And for the record, in the case of devel projects, discussions regarding the contents of those projects should be direct with the maintainers of those projects first. Given their unique role in being a location before inclusion in the openSUSE distributions, I can see how this list might be a suitable proxy or alternative to that from time to time) Regards, Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

And the question in my OP was not??? It's a factory that puts parts together to produce a product. My question was about a part I consider missing from the openSUSE product. Nuance between "factory" and "project" is too subtle too keep straight what belongs where without returning to the Development section puzzle at https://lists.opensuse.org/ for yet another review of too few words before forming every question. -- "Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. I respectfully request that you avoid always telling everyone what to write on this list. It might not be your intention, but your mails lately regularly give me the impression that they are geared at making the recipient feel unwelcome and try to drive him or her away. We all here know Felix for quite some time. We have learned his fascinations for "unusual" Display configuration, and AFAIK he has a reason for this -- his less than perfect eyesight (or at least he cares for people with less than perfect eyesight). We have learned to decode his emails and find the questions hidden somewhere in there. We have learned that he tests on old hardware that not many other people still care for. I appreciate that. If you manage to drive him away, this would be a loss to the project, at least in my humble opinion. -- Stefan Seyfried "For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for nature cannot be fooled." -- Richard Feynman -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

All that pasted information was what I was able to glean from various sources before asking here. e.g. http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/opensuse/discontinued/distribution/12.3/repo/oss/sus e/x86_64/fbset-2.1-938.1.1.x86_64.rpm 18-Jun-2017 00:18 I downloaded that years ago, so it has a Jan 2013 timestamp matching its content...
fbset was not removed 3 years ago, but 6 years
...not yet 6.

Branched later?
I got those from BS home:Ledest.
Usually what I'm looking for is simply:
mode columns rows
inxi -Gxx, which apparently is not part of any openSUSE default installation, sometimes provides the answer, other times not. I've searched several times over the years without finding better.

Unfortunately, in those 6 years KMS was not implemented on all graphics drivers which mean you may still need fbset for some more obscure ones. For KMS drivers there used to be some kmset utility which is not packaged either. Using some sysfs file might work as well. For reading the resolution on non-KMS drivers you can use some /proc or /sys file but for setting it fbset may be needed. That said, I am not aware of any driver that supports changing resolution and does not support KMS except maybe something like uvesafb.
