[opensuse-factory] Re: Resume on (new) laptop with encrypted disk with TW
"H.Merijn Brand"
I have a new laptop, installed with an SSD for the OS (TW) and a second encrypted disk for the data and homes.
When I close the lid, the laptop goes into hibernation, when I open the lid, I get a black screen with a cursor (that won't move when I use the touchpad). After a while the system reboots.
I'd like the laptop to be functional when I open after hibernation :) Anything I missed?
Are you sure it doesn't eventually emerge from hibernation? I have the exact same setup (except HDD instead of SSD for root file system) and on my system it takes quite a long time (with a blank black screen) for my laptop to finish thawing from hibernation. Suspend is very fast of course. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I just tried 1. Close lid < 2 seconds to go into hibernation 2. Open lid Blank screen with cursor, start counting ± 85 seconds, fan starts ± 166 seconds, screen completely blank foloowed by a reboot -- H.Merijn Brand http://tux.nl Perl Monger http://amsterdam.pm.org/ using perl5.00307 .. 5.27 porting perl5 on HP-UX, AIX, and openSUSE http://mirrors.develooper.com/hpux/ http://www.test-smoke.org/ http://qa.perl.org http://www.goldmark.org/jeff/stupid-disclaimers/

No, that goes into suspend. Suspend to ram. Hibernation is to disk. You can tell the system to go into hibernation instead on close lid. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. My guess is more the hybrid graphics card. Dunno what the tool is called to disable the Nvidia before hibernation and enable it afterwards.
First test could be to disable it in Bios

SPOT ON! You are my local hero for today :) I changed the BIOS setting from Hybrid to Discrete, and all works fine!

That's suspend, not hibernation.

Swap is not used during suspend to ram, which is what happens normally when you close the lid. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. Yes, my bad, sorry for the confusion (if any)
BTW: how big is your swap partition? I have 2G more than my RAM size.
Swap is not used during suspend to ram, which is what happens normally when you close the lid.
And the video-setting in BIOS already solved this case.

You can change the behaviour in Power Settings. It might have been hibernation as he said.

Indeed, but you can change it to whatever you want. I have hibernate on power button and suspend on lid close. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

It does take much longer on my laptop. But I don't have an SSD and it's already years old. What can one roughly expect for hibernate/thaw with an SSD and a modern laptop? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

I have a modern miniserver with SSD, and hibernate takes a bit. Even the bios checking routines take a bit, too. I haven't timed it, I seldom do it, but I think about a minute. Maybe half - the thing is, the display remains blank during most of the procedure, it is difficult to know what phase it is at. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
