[opensuse-factory] libevent in opensuse 11.4 is behind the times
I'm not sure when the cutoff for opensuse 11.4 was, but looking at the history for libevent, (http://monkey.org/~provos/libevent/) release candidates for 2.0 started 2010-08-08 with 2.0.6 and , with a stable released on 2010-12-16. It's now up to 2.0.11-stable, but OpenSuse 11.4 only has version 1.l4.14, from 11 months ago (released 2010-06-07). Is the cutoff window that long, or did it slip into a crack or what? Is libevent-2.0 scheduled for inclusion in OS 11.5? With an 18-month release cycle, that will make it 37 months or over 3 years, before a 2.x version would be available. Is libevent-2 something that might be considered for backporting? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I'm rather sure 2.0.11 will work fine, just nobody had the time to upgrade the library yet. There is only so much everybody can do. We suffer from hour-shortage on the day I guess :) About the version number: There was a lengthy discussion followed by two votes on how the current numbering scheme will be, and a clear definition when we switch the int before the dot (no, it has nothing to do with major.minor version numbering) Dominique -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

Hi, I don't believe there is even x.5 in SuSE/SUSE history, as far as I can remember only the 6.x version had 4 releases, and that was on 1999 (if I'm not mistaken, 6.0). yeah, you´re right. SuSE 6.4 and openSUSE 11.4 are the only releases which ends with a .4 instead of the SUSE-typical .0 to .3 For any other version-history-questions, here´s a great table to have a look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OpenSUSE#Releases Includes all SuSE-release since the very first, slackware-based release back in 1994. have fun....! I assume he's just saying that since 2.0.11-stable is out, some human has to pull 2.0.11-stable and update OBS with it, then push it to factory from there. If its an important library for you, volunteering to be the person that watches for updates and does the OBS / factory updates would ensure its as up to date as you keep it. I don't know about in the past, but currently openSUSE is very easy to contribute to as in the above. Just put your hip waders and walk on in. I'm running into various compatibility problems that are leaving me exposed to problems that could cause much worse problems for me, including losing my ability to easily access the internet. I need to prioritize my development efforts as my available development time is both unpredictable and limited... But if my contributions are still needed when I finish my upgrade, I will make it a priority to get involved! That's the best I can do right now though.. It's a 8-month cycle, not 18 month. Next release is Nov. I think. So less than 12 months. Also, if you really want it, you could ask here on factory if 2.x can be pushed into Tumbleweed and then upgrade your system to Tumbleweed. fyi: Tumbleweed is the rolling release version of openSUSE. I don't think it has a large user base yet, so I suspect you may be the first to hit a given problem. But I've been running on my workstation since the first of the year and I only recall one hick-up. Tumbleweed... URL? Info? First I've heard of it, but then haven't kept up with everything. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

If it's possible to install 1.4 parallel to 2.0 it might be possible. However, there's currently no policy nor process for introducing additional packages to already released distributions. It would be nice if that was possible somehow though. cu Ludwig -- (o_ Ludwig Nussel //\ V_/_ http://www.suse.de/ SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg) -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
