[opensuse-factory] testing btrfs
Hello, i'm trying to test the new btrfs filesystem in opensuse factory. i have currently followin kernel and btrfs packages installed: kernel-default-2.6.30-10.1 btrfsprogs-0.19-2.2 i'm running this in VirtualBox 3.0.2 i can create btrfs on /dev/sdb1 but when i mount it , i get following error : linux-m4pt:/home/luc # mount -vvvv /dev/sdb1 /data mount: fstab path: "/etc/fstab" mount: mtab path: "/etc/mtab" mount: lock path: "/etc/mtab~" mount: temp path: "/etc/mtab.tmp" mount: UID: 0 mount: eUID: 0 mount: spec: "/dev/sdb1" mount: node: "/data" mount: types: "(null)" mount: opts: "(null)" mount: you didn't specify a filesystem type for /dev/sdb1 I will try type btrfs mount: mount(2) syscall: source: "/dev/sdb1", target: "/data", filesystemtype: "btrfs", mountflags: -1058209792, data: (null) mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so looking in dmes , i see following : [ 3086.053308] device fsid 3446bae7efc3e33f-daf4e58f9a3617ae devid 1 transid 7 /dev/sdb1 [ 3086.054435] BTRFS: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (1). Yesterday evening just for fun and the fact that I had a spare HD in the box, "zypper in btrfsprogs", formatted a btrfs partition, mounted it from the command line and rsync'd some directories across from another box. Amended /etc/fstab, rebooted for a change of kernel and it came up mounted OK. I am using it as an additional backup drive, no problem if it loses data, so far so good. Possibly your problem is with VirtualBox. Is the "btrfs" module loaded? It loaded automatically when I tried mounting the partition and on reboot. May be later I can try creating a virtual HD under a VirtualBox VM to see if I get mount problems with it. tindog:~ # mount /dev/sda1 on / type xfs (rw) proc on /proc type proc (rw) sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw) debugfs on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw) udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw) devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,mode=0620,gid=5) /dev/sdb1 on /data1 type btrfs (rw) none on /tmp type tmpfs (rw) fusectl on /sys/fs/fuse/connections type fusectl (rw) none on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw) /proc on /var/lib/ntp/proc type none (ro,bind) /proc on /var/lib/ntp/proc type none (ro,bind) /proc on /var/lib/ntp/proc type none (ro,bind) tindog:~ # ls -l /data1 total 0 drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 2080 2009-03-21 23:14 ARTICLES drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 84 2008-11-07 01:43 COMMENTS drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 60 2008-09-29 11:49 ELECTRONICS drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 30 2008-09-29 12:15 GUITAR drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 6604 2008-12-16 20:45 HAMRADIO drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3392 2009-05-04 00:15 HARDWARE_MANUALS dr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 598 2008-11-21 20:58 letters drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 32 2008-09-29 12:16 MOVIES drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 510 2009-05-28 13:44 Sun_E4500 drwxr-xr-x 1 root root 30 2008-09-29 12:20 YOUTUBE tindog:~ # tindog:~ # df -h Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 870G 292G 579G 34% / udev 2.0G 560K 2.0G 1% /dev /dev/sdb1 401G 1.8G 399G 1% /data1 none 2.0G 92K 2.0G 1% /tmp tindog:~ # lsmod|grep btrfs btrfs 405400 1 libcrc32c 2424 1 btrfs Regards Sid. I'm actually using vanilla kernel 2.6.31-rc5, that could be the difference. Regards Sid.

i have currently followin kernel and btrfs packages installed: kernel-default-2.6.30-10.1 btrfsprogs-0.19-2.2
i'm running this in VirtualBox 3.0.2 i can create btrfs on /dev/sdb1 but when i mount it , i get following error
linux-m4pt:/home/luc # mount -vvvv /dev/sdb1 /data mount: fstab path: "/etc/fstab" mount: mtab path: "/etc/mtab" mount: lock path: "/etc/mtab~" mount: temp path: "/etc/mtab.tmp" mount: UID: 0 mount: eUID: 0 mount: spec: "/dev/sdb1" mount: node: "/data" mount: types: "(null)" mount: opts: "(null)" mount: you didn't specify a filesystem type for /dev/sdb1 I will try type btrfs mount: mount(2) syscall: source: "/dev/sdb1", target: "/data", filesystemtype: "btrfs", mountflags: -1058209792, data: (null) mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so
looking in dmes , i see following :

i did some testing using btrfsprogs version 0.18 after doing mkfs.btrfs with version 0.18 , the disk is mountable by the kernel.
so it seems btrfs tools are upgraded but also needs a kernel update to 2.6.31 or backport of the new format to 2.6.30
should i open a case for this or is 2.6.31 kernel still in de scope of openSuSE 11.2 ?
Factory now has 2.6.31 kernel, so everything should be fine for openSUSE 11.2. That's because the package btrfsprogs was missing in the
installation system or because the tools were moved from /usr/bin
to /sbin. Both issues should be fixed by now but maybe are not
available in factory yet.
A third problem is that the package btrfsprogs was missing the
supplements tag in the spec file but also that is fixed now.

Arvin

That means the tools are not in the installation system - this should be fixed with: ------------------------------------------------------------------- Tue Jul 28 17:23:08 CEST 2009 - snwint@suse.de - install libs before running graphviz postin - btrfsprogs are in /sbin now Don't know whether build 191 contains the fix already... looking around on linux kernel mailing list i found this thread
http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-btrfs@vger.kernel.org/msg02487.html
it mentions that using new version .19 of tools on "old" 2.6.30 kernel will not work because of change in internal data storage structure.
factory is using following versions : kernel :kernel-default-base-2.6.30.2-1.1 btrfs tools: btrfsprogs-0.19-2.2
There is a backport for 2.6.30 kernels. so is this backport included in openSuSE kernel or do we need to downgrade btrfsprogs ?

You just reminded me, yesterday I read a long article via linuxtoday.com about btrfs, that's what prompted me to try it. It did mention the kernel problem and how Linus had to be rescued when he could no longer get at data on 2.6.30 - may be he couldn't boot as he is using btrfs as his root filesystem. It'll be a while before I try using it for root seriously, perhaps on a spare box pretty soon if and after 2.6.31-rc appears in factory. Regards Sid.

i have tried K.O.D 2.6.31-rc4 last night and this was working fine :-) I will be out for a few weeks so I'll pick it up end this month but i think that 2.6.31 kernel will be fine . thanks , luc -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org
