[opensuse-factory] Build 908 kde_live_CD Problem installing Nvidia drivers to create an nvidia module -- version.h is missing in kernel
Dear Listmates, I'm unable to install Nvidia drivers on build 908 Factory. This may be due to the fact that the kernel-source doesn't match the kernel-desktop? This is what's installed for kernel. roman@opensuse:~> rpm -qa | grep kernel kernel-desktop-devel-2.6.36-18.1.x86_64 kernel-devel-2.6.36-18.1.noarch kernel-syms-2.6.36-18.1.x86_64 kernel-firmware-20100617-4.2.noarch kernel-desktop-2.6.37-6.1.x86_64 kernel-source-2.6.36-18.1.noarch kernel-default-devel-2.6.36-18.1.x86_64 kernel-xen-devel-2.6.36-18.1.x86_64 Any thoughts. I heard that "coolo" chose build 908 for Sunday/Monday release of 11.4 M4. However, today I took the liberty to try out the Factory kde_live_cd x86_64 download. I tried to install the latest Nvidia drivers. However, I'm getting a message "version.h" is missing. Any thoughts? Yes, that's the problem. And things like that are why I switched to only using nouveau some time ago (next to philosophical reasons of an open solution being preferable). Maybe this is a good point to try that yourself as well - nouveau has improved a lot in the last months (even though I see a few strange problems, but I'm not yet completely sure if I have a hardware problem hidden behind those). Still, if you want to install the binary blob from NVidia, you need to have kernel source and installation match correctly or things break. this driver does quite a bit of weird things. Im my case, it either crashes the machine entirely, renders very slow, pc fans go crazy or some parts or the screen get messed up. I gave up on it. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse-factory+help@opensuse.org

I gave up on it. I just installed build 909 and was able to install the Nvidia drivers successfully without errors. The kernel and kernel-source now match.
However, Dolphin is quite slow on starting up every time. K3b crashes on on start up every time which renders it unusable for additional testing. Kmail works. I added all of the Novell pdf documentation to KHelpCenter. However, rather than seeing a large "N" for Novel or the openSUSE icon, a question mark was added. It's as if the KHelpCenter was missing the icons. Cheers!
