[opensuse-factory] Sound broken?

Dear list, I zypper uped my system on the 20th and went away for the weekend. Today, I find out that my sound is completely gone. The Logitech G35 headset only gets recognized as an USB Advanced Audio Device which doesn't work at all. In my endless wisdom I thought that another zypper up would fix this problem, but sadly this is not the case. Due to bad experiences with btrfs, I'm also using ext4, so no snapshot to revert to. Am I out of luck or is there a way to fix this? Greetings -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Your luck may revive if you start explain your problem more precisely. "XYZ doesn't work at all" doesn't explain anything at all but for "something is wrong". As a start, please write more details of your hardware, the desktop and its setup (particularly about PulseAudio), how you used and exactly what doesn't work as expected. And, as usual: try to boot with the previous kernel and test with it. If it fixes the problem, try again with the latest kernel, and confirm that it breaks again. If this is confirmed, it means a kernel regression. Takashi -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse-factory+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse-factory+owner@opensuse.org

Hello, thanks for your answer. I am currently on the Tumbleweed snapshot 20150821 with the kernel-desktop 4.1.6-1. I'm using KDE (Plasma 5) and the default sound setup it brings, which uses pulseaudio. The problematic device is a Logitech G35 Headset which is connected via USB to a Gigabyte H77-D3H mainboard. There is no difference in connecting it directly on the back or through the front panel of my computer to the mainboard. It used to be listed as "Logitech G35 Headset" in the Audio Control module of KDE but now (after doing an update from 4.1.3->4.1.4->4.1.6) it's just a "USB Advanced Audio Device". Choosing that device as my output device in the same control module doesn't produce the desired sound on that device. Instead there is a very slight beep that I actually did not notice when writing my first mail because it was so silent. I tried outputting sound using Amarok, Audacious, Youtube and the Test button in the control module. However, recording does work strangely. Reverting to 4.1.4 does not fix the problem and I couldn't find an earlier version in the repos. I'd like to try 4.1.3 because that is the last known kernel that worked. Sadly, my only options are 4.1.{4,5,6} in the repos and the 4.1.3 kernel was apparently already removed from my system, it does not show up in the Advanced Grub menu... To test if I somehow borked my configuration of Pulseaudio, I downloaded the newest .iso and installed the newest Tumbleweed snapshot on a different machine to test it, but it shows the same (mis-)behaviour. Connecting another headset, which uses 3,5mm jacks, and choosing that as the output device does work as desired. dmesg output when connecting the device: [ 3617.735626] usb 3-1: new full-speed USB device number 2 using xhci_hcd [ 3617.933674] usb 3-1: New USB device found, idVendor=0d8c, idProduct=0170 [ 3617.933678] usb 3-1: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 [ 3617.933680] usb 3-1: Product: USB Advanced Audio Device [ 3617.933681] usb 3-1: Manufacturer: C-Media Electronics Inc. Thanks, this explains much better.
Yes, likely. As default, only three versions are kept. You can change it in /etc/zypp/zypp.conf, multiversion.kernels line. In anyway, there is no recent changes relevant to this Logitech headset, AFAIK.
OK. Usually removing ~/.config/pulse* is also a help in case where PA gets screwed up. (But I don't think this would help in this case; see below.)
C-Media is the chip used by this headset (which is quite common). If the USB device ID looks really different, it's more likely a hardware (firmware) problem -- i.e. the device resets to another state by some reason. Do you happen to have any hwinfo or alsa-info.sh output taken at the working state? You may try another USB port, or another machine to see if this appears in the right state. Hello, sorry for using your time. It seems that it really is, like you said, a firmware problem: https://forums.logitech.com/t5/Earphones-Headphones-Headsets/G35-Headset-ran... Good thing it's still under warranty...
