Over the next year I will be converting 145 OpenSUSE 15.4 running MATE to Mint Linux unless you can convince me that MATE is coming.
This is openSUSE, no one here should be pressured/demanded/bullied into developing anything, or convincing you that anything will be developed. Leap 15.5 will be a product of what the community builds, and is provided 'as is without warranty of any kind' (quoting our license) That said, "the community" can include you.... so.... should we all reinterpret this mail as you stepping up to help maintain MATE in Leap going forward? Your 145 openSUSE 15.4 installation make it sound like you have a healthy justification to encourage your contribution to our collective efforts. I think it would be more effective than ranting on a mailinglist trying to make us feel bad we all don't provide what you want for free.

The Alpha version of 15.5 had MATE desktop as a choice. MATE is no longer offer nor is Cinnamon in 15.5. Some say MATE is stale - I say it is Mature, Stable, and relative bug free - what you want for a stable computer environment.
I still see mate in 15.5's inherited packages (from backports). So maybe it was only eliminated from the install media due to size constraints... I assume you can add an online repo during installation and install both mate and cinnamon. (Or install after bootup.) -- js suse labs

I have a bugzilla opened on that - it worked perfectly in the alpha 15.5 but does not in 15.5.
You are aware that this is a BETA and not yet the final release? In other words: You did the right thing, i.e. test the beta and report any errors that you find. Hello Larry, we'll be happy if you contribute to Mate in Leap 15.5. I'd recommend starting with https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Submitting_bug_reports If the package broken, and nobody is responding to bugs or interested in maintaining it for Leap then we'll have to consider dropping it. Just like we do with any other broken package. Let's use this momentum try to get it fixed. Yes, MATE still is in Tumbleweed, but many of those retired people I support do not have enough internet to support zypper dup that Tumbleweed requires way too often. They could not do windows 7, 8, 10 and 11. XP was the last Windows they were comfortable with. Some still use Windows XP and the mail app that they used with Windows 95. I dropped Windows in the XP days - Centos was the 1st Full time Linux and I had VirtualBox working with an Windows XP guest on a 4 core computer with 4mb of ram. I had not completely wean myself off Windows as I had not found Linux apps to replace my Windows apps. Many of us do not care for KDE or Gnome. The other choice LXDE does not provide all the options needed. Looks like 15.4 is the last OpenSUSE version I will be supporting. Mint Linux offers MATE as a standard desktop. That will probably be the winner as it has a long term version. Over the next year I will be converting 145 OpenSUSE 15.4 running MATE to Mint Linux unless you can convince me that MATE is coming.
